Mexican officials to bike to work

Officials in Mexico City have been ordered to leave their cars behind and cycle to work once a month.

The new city regulation that has just come into force is aimed at reducing traffic and pollution in one of the most congested cities in the world.

Article continues...

Interesting what the mayor can do there. Here, people are upset because for certain city jobs, you must be a resident of the city. I can't imagine the flak such a regulation would cause here. (Although I'd support it.)

Officials around here would just take one day a month off to dodge it.

Can't read it since the BBC is blocked in China, but it sounds a lot like similar measures "introduced" in China.

Shanghai Transport Officials Told to Keep Cars at Home Once a Month

Note the key phrase "No details were provided on how the regulation will be enforced" . There was a car-free / energy-saving day for government ministries last year, but it had little-to-no effect on anything other than newspaper ink sales.
