Spring -- bah humbug!
Since I commute just about every day, you'd think I'd like spring, but this is definitely not the case. The weather is too flaky, and I'll take bad consistent weather over flaky weather anytime.
Since spring has sprung, temps have been consistently below freezing in the morning and warm in the afternoon. As a result, my options are basically to haul too much junk, underdress in the morning, or overdress in the afternoon. On the few days where it's been warmer in the mornings due to cloud cover, I'm consistently getting rained on in only one direction. Again, the only realistic options are to be overprepared for one direction and underprepared the other. If the weather has to suck, it's just so much more pleasant if it can suck all day. |
35 yesterday morning, 56 on the way home (and raining)
33 this morning (and foggy,) creeping up to mid 50s by afternoon (and raining) Windpants, helmet liner, long gloves, etc on the way in. Gotta stuff it all in the backpack and haul it home in the afternoon. I'd rather it was consistent 30s again or mid-50s and rain all the time, too. Not this jumping back and forth weather. |
You just need to move to someplace with a more hospitable climate.
ATL was 65F this morning, cloudy, and calm winds. This afternoon, 79F and partly to mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of showers. Sounds perfect to me :p |
Its not that bad. I have just enough to keep me warm in the morning but it compresses well and fits in my backpack. My fenders clip on and off and if there is even a light prediction of rain the fenders get clipped on.
I commute from Hillsboro to Tigard every day :) I do wish it could be a bit more consistent though... |
It hasn't warmed up/declouded enough yet for the cagers to recover their road rage energy level, they're still in their winter doldrums autopilot mode.
|
mid 40s in the morning, mid 70s in the afternoon here. I want to complain, but I'm too busy taking the long way home.
|
I just wear my evening commute stuff under a thing outside layer. I leave the outer layer at work, or bring it home in my bag. It's not so bad, and we haven't had a ton of rain yet. I prefer this to the snow any day. Also, I like not having to wear a hat and shoe covers.

Besides, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Lately, the weather's sucked, but the 7 day outlook is good. The weather gods must have heard me..... |
I don't mind the up and down of the Spring temperatures so much. It's the wind that gets me... the extra twenty minutes is grueling.
|
yeah this "transition" weather is really hard to dress for
it's even worse if you work in an office and have to haul work clothes with you on top of that too |
It is transition weather all the time here. I don't mind that. The wind, on the other had, has been very unforgiving to me recently.
|
I've noticed my daily temp swings are getting to about 20+ degrees this time of year vs usually 10 degrees in the winter and summer. This combined with frequent rain showers and winds makes the commute a little trickier to dress for. However it still usually requires less overall equipment and studded tires are not necessary any more.
Still I enjoy seeing the birds coming back, the flowers blooming, and the trees budding. More people are getting out on the towpath (MUP) and it is now light for both my commutes. Things are definitely improving. Craig |

Layers, and panniers to carry what you're not wearing.
|
I am still trying to determine when the weather is stable in colorado. Maybe for a month or two in summer.
No biggie. Y'all just need something to complain about. :p I had my first sub freezing commute in sometime this morning. |
This thread just made me check the weather here and it's improved!
High of 40 today with rain and sleet (should be a fun commute home), but the rain/sleet/snow that was forcast for tomorrow morning looks like its going to come through tonight. High of 46 tomorrow. No precip. Guess I'm agreeing with you Banerjek. I'll take all my lousy weather today, thank you. |
