Nah it's because it's a summary probably. It's probably like several have 9, a few have 10, one or two has 12, 14, 18, 25, etc.

I've got two. On the one hand, I kinda go "WOW how could you have 17 bikes?" but on the other hand, my friend at one point had almost 10 cars...

I've got a beater hybrid I use for commuting, and a fixie I rebuilt myself... it looks cool, but for some reason I don't find it very comfortable. So while it is totally rideable, I don't ride it much.

Brian Ratliff 04-22-07 10:38 PM

I have three bikes currently.

1) long distance commuter based on a road bike frame with a rack and fenders and lower gearing, newly re-built after an accident which claimed the frame.

2) a short distance commuter; a Raleigh Rush Hour fixed gear, my latest acquisition for city riding.

3) a true road bike, currently set up for fast day cruises with the cycling club, but can be stripped down for light racing. After I had to replace the frame on my long distance commuter, this is now my oldest bicycle.

In the next year or so, I expect to be building up a touring bike which will play double as a heavy duty, low maintainance, winter commuter, complete with internal geared hub and front and rear racks. That's my current project; it is still in the planning stages.

swwhite 04-23-07 08:30 AM

Three for me.

The "A" bike, the main commuter, a Trek 4300 with the classic milk crate attached to the rear rack, a 5 amp-hour battery in a wooden box bolted to the frame, and a 20-watt halogen headlight, and fenders of course.

The "old-man" errand bike. This is a Schwinn Suburban that I got for free because the shifter was broken beyond repair. It is locked into a single speed, and at some point I will convert it to a real single-speed or put on an internal hub. It is used for errands because it is (I hope) less of a target for theft.

The "multi-modal" winter beater. This is new and not completely on-line. It is a used Diamondback something-or-other, a bit of rust, some chips on the paint. It has less stuff on it so I can lift it onto the bike rack on the city bus and extend my operating range. It can be used as it is, but I want fenders, lights, and a more comfortable seat before I use it regularly. In November, it will get studded tires and be the winter beater, so I can become a four-season biker and earn my coveted winter certification.

acroy 04-23-07 08:39 AM

1-commuter
2-mtb
3-road bike
4-wife's
so fleet totals 4, 3 are "mine" i guess
The commuter gets about 5000 miles/yr, the mtb maybe 500 miles, the road bike.... not much. may sell it.

here and there 04-23-07 08:47 AM

1) 06 Specialized Rockhopper which I used for road rides, mtn rides, and for commuting when I tried that. After 2,600ish miles on it I still don't feel comfortable on it so I'll likely end up selling it somewhere down the road.

2) 06 Giant Rincon. Originally I bought it for mountain biking, but with certain medical problems that have come up, I won't be mountain biking for quite some time so when I do start riding again the rincon will be my main ride as it fits me much better than the rockhopper.

Eventually I'm going to get myself a recumbent, but that probably won't happen until next year.

nitropowered 04-23-07 09:07 AM

1: Race rig. Cannondale CAAD8 with Record and PTSL
2: Commuter/TT double duty rig. I just popped off the stem/bullhorns/spikes/tt shifters and put on a stem/bar/centaur shifters, adjusted the seat and I ride that to commute. I use it to TT on because its a smaller frame and so in a stage race I dont have to readjust my main #1 bike to TT
3: IRO fixed gear, phil hubs, record pista cranks
4: Cannondale 29'er upgraded with Juicy 7's and X-9 shifters
5: Planning, cutting, building, welding, painting (well sending it off to paint) custom steel. Probably replacing #1.

I also plan on building/welding a cross bike with couplers.

ken cummings 04-23-07 09:35 AM

Not counting the tadpole trike of course.

starcolony 04-23-07 03:19 PM

Put me down for two bikes.

Trek 7.3 FX- Used for smooth/dry/clean/paved rides.

Trek 4500- Used for play/beater/wet/mud/dirt rides.

I sold my Trek 4300 a month ago and regretted not having a back-up bike. I fixed that just today buying the 4500.

Cheers, TR

chevy42083 04-23-07 03:25 PM

2 road bikes (one for the girl to ride)
1 BMX bike that technically just needs tubes/tires
1 BMX that needs a major overhaul.

Tristan035 04-25-07 08:47 AM

early 90sCarbon Specialized Allez Epic- my daily rider
2005 Felt F75 roadie
late 90s Gary Fisher Kaitai mtb
late 90s Trek 6500 mtb
mid 90's Gary Fisher Tassajara- what got me into biking

next on my list is a decent fixie. All of these are in my tiny apartment but who needs a place to eat anyways

InTheRain 04-25-07 09:55 AM

I have 2 bikes, my wife has 1... but my daughter, who just turned 8 has 4 bikes! It's garage sale time! Actually, I think I'll just donate them.

Merckx-TiAx 04-26-07 12:43 PM

I have 5:

1) Orbea Orca (Carbon)
2) Eddy Merckx TiAx (Titanium)
3) Fuji Absolute Flatbar (Aluminum)
4) Bridgestone RB-1 (Steel)
5) Specialized StumpJumper (Steel)

All in working order rotate between the bikes for commuting, recreational riding, errand runs.

noisebeam 04-26-07 12:45 PM

I did vote two, that is two operational bikes in my possession.

I actually own four bikes, but one has a broken frame and the other has been indefinitely loaned to a friend. (I don't really expect, nor want it back)

Al

LlewelynCycles 04-26-07 02:40 PM

1) Bianchi racer that's older than me. It's an '87 model, very light and fast - a dream to ride.
2) Trek hybrid converted to a road bike/tourer.

I commute with the Trek, but I'd like a beater road bike with milk crate :D.

Well... technically, the last category is an integration of the tail of the curve. Not a true increase. :)

Zero_Enigma 04-26-07 06:23 PM

3 bikes for me.

1. Road Bike
2. Peugout MTB (needs a new chain and crank/BB fix but still rides with a slight wobble)
3. Custom MTB (primary ride)

I don't have a beater but I am looking into finding an aluminum bike for all weather riding. Also a nice true hybrid for riding on the skinnys with no back/shoulder soreness. My Peugout is a touch small for me as I get toe clipping once in a while if I turn too sharp an angle and my toes are stuck out but otherwise it works liek a hybrid and I can ride straight up. Still need a bike comp for that bike.

funrover 04-26-07 07:22 PM

Since you added OPERATIONAL..LMAO 5

JanMM 04-26-07 07:28 PM

Three (plus a tandem I share with my stoker):
'94 Cannondale hybrid singlespeed
'03 Novara Big Buzz hybrid
'00 Rans Tailwind recumbent

PhattTyre 04-26-07 07:34 PM

I have 7:

1) Main commuter, a Schwinn World Sport townie conversion.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/188/4...a6fcfba9bf.jpg

2) 700c cruiser, back up commuter and great bar bike, it's for sale soon to make room and get money toward a touring bike for my summer plans.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/222/4...912559d3fa.jpg

3) 2000 Lemond Buenos Aires, my main road bike and just about my dream road bike.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/172/4...3e3b64f693.jpg

4) Specialized Langster, fixed gear fun. I ride this like a road bike, I've even done a century on it.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/182/4...80a6efe6f3.jpg

5) '99 Specialized SS-Works, my only mtn bike (for now, hoping for a 29er soon), recently converted to a single speed. This bike (with gears) will hopefully get me through a dirt century this summer.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/222/4...dbb8b0aa4e.jpg

6) The Chopper, good for bar rides, short errands, and general novelty fun.http://farm1.static.flickr.com/178/4...7f85e9dbca.jpg

7) The Runt, as sold by Toys R Us a few years ago. I don't have a picture, but the wheels are about the size of a shopping cart wheel and it moves at walking pace. It's a lot of fun to jump into pools.

Sorry about so many pics, I recently opened a flickr account.

Varroa 04-27-07 07:31 AM

I have 3:

1) Devinci Havok 1 FS MTN bike
2) Nirve Fifty Five Cruiser
3) Commuter bike (old Rocky Mtn race MTN bike converted to a city bike with slicks and mirrors)

uke 05-11-09 06:40 PM

Currently 3: two road bikes that cost a lot, and one MTB that cost a little. I probably won't put any meaningful mileage on the MTB until a.) I get a computer for it, or b.) it starts to snow. This presumes I won't sell or throw it away in the mean time.

riff 05-11-09 06:54 PM

Darn. You forced me to come to grips with the reality that I am a bike-aholic. 3 race bikes (carbon, Ti, alu), 3 cross bikes (including 1 singlespeed), 3 fixed gear/ ss bikes, 2 mtb's, and 1 track dedicated bike. Then add my husband's 4-5.... :twitchy:

I've just come to the conclusion that - mathematically speaking - my desired number of bikes is "n + 1", where "n" is the number I currently have! :D
