commuter coffee cup/bottle/thing?
 

Be a hero to my caffeine addicted wife.
She bike commutes, and jams a clunky insulated coffee cup into her water bottle holder each morning. It rattles and barely fits.
She'd like an insulated something for her coffee. We've seen water bottles designed for cold, but worry how they'd stand up to hot coffee.

I met this need by taking a cage-type water bottle to the store with me when I shopped for an insulated cup. I found one for $4 at a TJ Max store. The cup has no handle, is the same diameter as a standard bottle, and has a dimpled rubberized housing that keeps it from rattling or coming free unless I pull it out. I had a choice of about five different cups in the same price range that would have worked.

More recently, I've seen several at a Target store that looked to have exactly the same shape as a standard bottle, except for the opening at the top. They even have a thick band of rubber where the cage would hit.

If the mug she currently uses is too small to fit snugly into a water-bottle cage, you might try putting one of those sheet-foam insulator things that go on soda cans on it, or just wrapping it in sheet foam. It's not the most elegant-looking thing in the world, but it prevents rattling.

Sierra trading post has a tumbler called the Aletta Grand Canister for $10. It fits perfect in a standard bottle holder. Is spill free once the top is twisted on properly. has a somewhat handy storage space (that can also help to open it up when the lid gets sealed shut because of cooling. and the double walled top keeps it warmer longer. The only draw back is that you have to twist the lid off all of the way to drink from it ( I do not recommend that on the bike).


Thermos nissan has a quite nice tumbler mug that is quite similar but is easier to drink out of. (my only drawbacks are that it is $30 for a mug that is not lined with gold and you can hit your nose on the top.

Just walk into the store with your water bottle cage and try different stuff out. We have like 7 travel mugs in our cabinet, and I found one that works perfectly with my cage.

Just try not to look like a thief :)

The Nissan JMW-500 is the best one of the lot if you want absolutely spill-proof-ness. I got tired of spilling scalding hot coffee on me and the bike everytime I hit a bump.

It will fit into any water bottle cage though it will rattle. Keeps drinks hot (too hot really) all day. You can operate the top with one hand and lock it down if you have to toss it in your pack. Only problem is that is is pricey and hard to find. And it keeps liquids too hot so it's easy to scald yourself.

To stop the rattles, get a little neoprene coozy - works like a champ.

Or a Topeak adjustable cage. I got one a REI. Works like a champ and the Nissan bottle absolutey is the best. Commuted all Feb.here in Pa with many days below 0 w/ the wind chills. Coffee was still hot even after an hour in those temps!

Yeah, I tried to use my kid's bottle cozy but it kept coming off everytime I went to pull it out of the cage. Need a full-coverage thin neoprene sock.

I've got one of these - which I love. However, when riding with a full cup, it rattles enough that coffee makes its way up through vent hole onto the top 'shelf'. A few more bumps, and the coffee can make its way over the lip - which wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't located directly in front of my crotch, with a constant headwind :rolleyes:

Maybe I'll try the neoprene idea - that ought to help.

Starbucks has a brushed silver thermos that does not rattle as it fits snugly in my water bottle cage. They have a pink one too.

I put a plastic Profile Design cage on my seat tube. It's a bit stretchy so it hubs my plastic travel mug very nicely, no rattling. It was only a few dollars at Price Point.

Outstanding! Now I can take off my fancy helmet mounted cup holder/straw tube gizmo...

I usually have a cup in the AM before I ride in to work...which is what I'm doing at the moment. Can't imagine drinking coffee during a ride though.

With the price of Starbucks coffee I'm sure they'd be very happy if everyone drank that much coffee on a daily basis.

I'm certain of it. It doesn't make my point any less valid though.

I drink coffee and eat donuts during my ride but it's easy to do on an uncrowded bike path. Never in traffic.
