1000km and a test drive

Rolled 1000km this morn for 2007. About 1.5 weeks earlier than 2006.

I test drove a trek cyclecross yesterday. It was my first time on a bike other than a mountain bike. It was fast and I could will it around corners. I'm considering a cross as a summer commuter and for recreational rides. I bought a kona mountain bike 3 years ago before I knew anything about bikes. I find it has made an alright commuter, but I also thought I'd be in the mountains all the time. It turns out, I'm usually donkin' around the city streets and bikepaths. I'm going to try some more crosses and maybe touring bikes this weekend.
If you have any things to keep in mind or watch out for, please share.

Have you considered looking around yard sales and the like for a new ride? can find some gemes there.
If you need a new bike then Surly is a solid brand. Co-Motion makes a hell of a road bike. Is Spot Brand still around? You could also try On-One.
I commute on a cross bike, and it is great for city riding, pot-holes, curbjumping etc. Get something with load of clearance and some beafy wheels. You can go fast and ignore the conditions that flat many-a-road-tire (tyre?)
cheers.
