The audio on your bike thread.
Ok, I recall small threads made a while ago about audio when riding and such so I figured to put it all in thread.
Which some poeple like ear plug/headphones for thier music some like speakers and such. Personally I find that if you're riding a bike and wish to listen to music you should only have one plug in the ear and should only be the right ear for obvious reasons as you're mostly on the right side of the road. The left ear should be clear so you can hear traffic and the volume should be low so you can still enjoy the music yet still have some outside hearing of what's around you as well to help increase your awareness of what's around you from the left ear doing al the work. I myself use a speaker system. It's integrated in the bag. Speaker backpack which allows me to ride while hearing the the news radio for traffic reports and sometimes if/when I have the mp3 player hooked up for newscasts. I ran into this a few days ago and thought it was interesting. Very San Fran and downtownish but I love the artistic bike side with the speakers loaded up. Speakers on bikes |
I guess lets also make this thread a dual use thread other then audio sytems. Lets all post good riding songs as well. I'll start.
Please list songs in this format ' [song name] - [artist] ' Off the top of my head : Watching the Wheels - John Lennon Fender Bender - Kid Koala Little Green Bag - Reservior Dogs the Movie (for full effect wear a suit!! If you don't get the reference watch the movie :D ) Starlight - Muse Jumping Jack Flash - Rolling Stones Low Rider - War (best if you're riding a chopper bike) City of Blinding Lights - U2 (good tune for night riding) Bicycle Race - Blümchen (good remix of Queens song) Life in the Fast Lane - Eagles Rockin' In The Free World - Neil Young Another One Bites the Dust - Queen (I had a roadie go nuts when I had that playing when I passed them on the hills  ) Fly Like An Eagle - Steve Miller Band Take It Easy - The Eagles Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (NB: headbanging on a bike really gets all eyes on you :D ) Drinking In LA - Bran Van 3000 We Are All Made Of Stars - Moby Dogma - KMFDM That's it for more. Feel free to contribute in. |

This is my ipod nano and speaker device:Attachment 44467I pop riveted a mop clamp onto it. Very light and tiny. I can hear music and traffic. Perfect solution.
|
A couple more tunes.
More then a Feeling - Boston (19 or) Nineteen - Paul Hardcore (for those army fridays I think this guy was the first for the techno pioneers I could be wrong) |
I listen to tunes on an empty wide open MUP. Headphones it is. Personally, when I hit the streets I don't listen to anything. I need to get my thoughts in order for work.
Tunes as of late: I am an EBM freak and prefer full albums. Here is what is on my mp3 player lately. A23: storm A23: failure VNV Nation: Empires VNV Nation: Futureperfect Wumpscut: blood sweat.... and a few others for different moods: Radiohead: Kid A Primus: sailing the seas of cheese Stabbing Westward: misc songs. |
I wear in-ear buds. Both of them. No issues yet.
It cuts and replaces wind noise with audio for me. |
ear-buds. Both ears, while it does mean I can't hear as much, it also means it's harder for cagers to startle me by doing stuff like screaming, honking, or dropping their plows to scrape along the road.
Songs: too many to list, I have about 120 song play list I cycle through. But it's mostly New Wave or 70's/80's punk, in the vein of the Talking Heads, the Clash, U2, etc. Also, some days I do it up techno style. |

I use in-ear buds with my 2G iPod Shuffle (perfect for riding). I keep the volume fairly low so that I can hear everything going on around me (you can pull up next to me and talk and I'll be able to hear you).
As far as tunes as of late: Laika: Lost in Space Sea and Cake: Everybody Wes Montgomery: Incredible Jazz Guitar of... Tommy Guerrero: A Little Bit of Somethin' American Analog Set: Set Free Moose: random singles/EPs |

The mop clamp comes from my local hardware store, clips to my handlebars perfectly. |
ear buds. Loud enough that I can hear acoustic guitars, but not so loud I can't hear my commuting buddy telling me to slow down. :)

Let the flame fest begin!!! :fight:
Seriously, these threads always turn into a flame fest around here. BTW-I listen to my iPod sometimes when commuting. |

I actually listen to music often, now that I have a Treo :).
It works great, as I usually have to take a phone with me on rides (have, not want). So I found Pocket Tunes and a 2GB SD card. Loaded it full of MP3's. Then I plugged my el-cheapo corded earbud headset into the Treo.. away I go! I have one ear free to hear others around me, and music in the other. If I get a phone call I can push and answer it while slowing down, instead of fumbling around for the phone. IMHO, it's the end-all-be-all. I'd never consider taking my iPod(s), but my Treo is awesome! |
Bike speaker
This link is just something I found on Ebay. Also that ipod speaker before looks like it'll work with any other mp3 player as well. It says for the ipod but that's probably because all the ipods (I don't own one) have thier headphone jakcs at the bottom so it's more convienent for the ipods to stick in but if you stuck your mp3 player in I'm sure it'll play as well. Heck if you need to have a female-to-female adaptor then that will allow you to place that mp3 player anywhere you want without being stuck on the speaker. |
Maybe I'm weird... I just don't have any desire to listen to music while I ride. Most days that is the only quiet time I get, and I find I need silence to decompress from the day. In the morning I have birds to listen to, and I really enjoy that (heard a Swainson's Thrush this morning, I think, along with about a billion robins and a couple fo red-winged blackbirds).
I like taking my Shuffle to the gym, because the white noise from the fans and/or the crappy music there drive me batty, and I'm about 50/50 when I'm walking or running; but for some reason my bike is different. I HATE trying to pass people (on bikes or feet) who have their music cranked so loud they don't hear my bell. |
I'm using one of these. It seems to work ok. Pretty inexpensive. Works with anything with a mini headphone jack.
I'm currently listening to Guster and Gomez. Working my way through the alphabet. http://www.nashbar.com/nashbar_photo...CL-MOUNTED.gif |

I don't have a portable sirius receiver.
I have a palm treo windows mobile pda phone. I can stream my account into the phone over the web for free. |
I don't wear headphones, but I've been known to sing to myself -- particularly
Kraftwerk "Computer Love" (like singing the 'dee-do, dee-do, dee-dee-do-do' synth parts), sometimes remixing it on the fly with "Tour De France" if a nice tailwind kicks in. Boards of Canada "Hi-Scores" (in the morning when I'm still waking up) Dinah Washington "Is you is or Is you ain't my baby?" Rae & Christian mix from the Verve Remixed CD (when I'm warmed up) Veruca Salt "Seether" and "Volcano Girls" also sometimes transitioning into slower tempo Pixies songs if I feel tired. ... stuff like that ... I mean, why have an Ipod if you can't easily pick your songs to suit the situation ;) |

Good thread. My commute along a pretty busy lane in east Portland takes me through a heavily Hispanic neighborhood called Rockwood. Lots of thumping lowriders, so when I hear the heavy bass coming up behind me it's no big deal. A couple days ago I hear it and glance back and it's a guy on a three-wheel recumbent with the biggest freakin' boombox strapped to his bike. I just had to smile. Wish I had a picture.
Here's the BEST bike song ever, lyrics by Gram Parsons and Chris Hilman and done by the Flying Burrito Brothers. Originally written about motorcycles I think (or tour buses???) I give you "Wheels" We've all got wheels to take ourselves away We've got telephones to say what we can't say We've all got higher and higher every day Come on wheels take this boy away We're not afraid to ride We're not afraid to die So come on wheels take me home today Come on wheels take this boy away Now when I feel my time is almost up and destiny is in my right hand I'll turn to him who made my faith so strong Come on wheels make this boy a man We're not afraid to ride We're not afraid to die come on wheels take me home today come on wheels take this boy away come on wheels take this boy away |
