ah, the sweet smells of the commute

Alternating cherry blossoms and rotting deer carcass, the sweet smell of pine mixed with stagnant pond water. The occasional skunk. I love em all!

Road tar and construction dust, popcorn from the movie theatre (on the way home), the first spring blooms and new leaves. And dog poop someone failed to scoop - in the middle of the pathway, EW!!

Maybe I will vary my route to see what new smells I can find! There's a bakery somewhere nearby...

Landfill gas and vehicle exhaust. Plus low tide some days.

At least lately in the afternoon occasionally it's been masked by freshly cut lawns. Once in a while I get the aroma of people preparing their meals. That's nice...sometimes.

Around this season - barbeques! Makes me hungry. :)

Doughnut smell. I used to ride in behind a Safeway grocery store on the way in to work. Every morning at 7:30, I'd get smacked in the face with that lucious yeasty odor. Mmmmmm... Ohhhhhh...

rando 05-11-07 07:24 PM

doughnuts. fried food.

Cyclaholic 05-11-07 07:56 PM

I used to have a long climb running right next to a chook farm.... the challenge in mid summer was to not puke.

Honeysuckle is blooming along the path now along with some other sweet smelling but as yet unidentified flowers.

DVC45 05-11-07 08:19 PM

I just passed by a Chinese buffet restaurant on the way home, I wanted to stop and eat, but its getting dark and drizzly. Oh, well...

I'm very glad that the Bradford Pears have stopped blooming. It took almost a week of the stench along my route to realize what was causing it.

Besides that, I tend to enjoy everything with the possible exception of the really heavy diesel exhaust.

Freaking fast food joints and their dang overactive vents. I swear they blow that smell as far as they can.
Flonase is working and I can smell!
The smell of pungent sewage treatment plants in the evening combined with swarms of gnats.

Marylandnewbie 05-12-07 07:18 PM

Mexican/Salvadoran food, auto body paint, composting mulch, chinese food, people grilling, McDonalds, honeysuckle and jasmine blooming, goose poop, tidal backwash in the river, storm sewer/sanitary sewer crossover and finally auto fumes. And then of course there are weird smells that defy categorization.

squeakywheel 05-12-07 07:24 PM

Smoke from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area burning. :(

arcticbiker 05-12-07 07:25 PM

My favorite smell is the local compost plant along the water front! It's almost as good as apple pie.

I have a BBQ shop on the way that gives that nice hickory smoke for about a mile, then the candle shop with everchanging smells. There is also the occasional dead fish on the lake front mixed with the diesel and road kill. I think more than the smells, I enjoy the sunrise and sunsets accross the lake. It makes me want to keep a camera on hand all the time.

Da Tinker 05-13-07 08:40 AM

My morning route took me past Ruby's, where the BBQ pit was firing up and then, 0.6 miles late, past the best donut shop in the region.

And i was downwind of both.
