Helmet color/ visibility
Where did all the yellow helmets go? If you have a big melon and you want daytime visibility I guess you're out of luck? Yellow even seems scarce regardless of size.
Any suggestions? |
lime green seems to be the chosen color for those working on highway construction. Never have I seen a neon green helmet, tho.? I still have my yellow one. Think it shows up much further than my red one. sort of have to buy a red and yellow one soon tho. Our club is going to full kit with a red/yellow helmet. Red/yellow is a winner for being seen.

I think white is best for helmet visibility color.

I like my Red Giro. Red bike, helmet, backpack. Safety without looking too Freddy ;)

Al Yes white is one of the first colors I can pick outfrom afar. one guy on my commute has an old All foam (no plastic) helmet and I can spot him a mile away. Actually Im a an avid technical scuba diver and one of my dive buddies (before we all wore force fins) one of my buddies wore white Mares fins and those fins could always be seen from quite a distance when the rest of him dissapeared into the darkness. the lime green fins were next best. I just bought a new Giro helmet in "Chalk" not quite white for the be seen reason. "John" |
Yes a lighter color is good but no matter what it's good to add reflectivity AND/OR lights to the lid. That way cagers will know that the the 'melon' is attached and not air-born

I suggest white as ANSI yellow is a less common helmet color and for the reasons you state. White is a good compromise and hardly a compromise either. Of course the helmet is only a (very) small part of visibility and only really visible from the front. It is part of supplemental, not primary visibility. But every bit helps. Al |
My very non-scientific research done from looking at other cyclists far off in the distance makes me inclined to say WHITE is the most-visible helmet color.

I'm not that crazy about white since I feel the need to standout from the background. One reason for workers wearing lime is that the cones, barrells, fencing and equipment near them is usually orange. Since there is a big solid white line running right along beside where I'm riding, I prefer something different. Plus white is too much like a spot of glare in bright sun too.
Lime, orange, yellow and red are my favorites biking colors. I have a yellow bell citi helmet and an orange caesco passion helmet. I wear orange or lime jersey/shirts. Another thing to consider is big patches of solid color in addition to be a bright color. |
Pistols ay? Maybe I should carry one for better vis :D

Bell Citi. Goes to 62cm, just barely big enough for my head. The Metro goes bigger but I'm not sure it's available in commuter yellow as my Citi is.
