I have been trying out my new-used backup/multimodal/winter-beater bike recently. It has none of the storage and hauling items on it, so it is light enough for me to heave onto the bike rack on the bus if necessary. I like to cover the seat with a plastic bag while it is parked at work, in case of rain. If it does rain (as it did once) I don't like to put the wet bag into my nice new backpack. What to do? What someone suggested, just in passing in a thread on another topic: stuff it up under the seat.

Brilliant in its simplicity.

By the way, I saw at the LBS a bike seat with a little storage compartment built into it. It's one of those nice wide "old man" seats, so I might have to look into it.

What kind of seat is this that you feel you must protect it from water?

Don't forget... you can't feed your bike seat after midnight.

Perhaps it's his butt he wants to protect from a wet saddle. At least, that's why I cover mine on rainy days.

I cover mine cuz it's leather and expensive, hides it from thieves and keeps it dry from the inevitable afternoon rain showers.

Couldn't you just turn the bag inside-out?

I have to cover my brooks if it rains while I'm in the office. I carry an extra shopping bag or 2 in my pack. They are so cheap you can throw them away if you want....and they weigh like nothing.

Yes, it is my own seat that I want to protect, from having to sit on a wet bike seat.

Also, however, my parking spot get some sun, and regular hammering by the sun probably would degrade the bike seat over time. In addition, this seat has a little tear, not enough to justify replacement, and I worry about water getting under the tape I applied to cover the hole.

As for not wanting to turn the bag inside out and put it in my pack, that's just a matter of my fussy nature. I have an Ortlieb waterproof messenger backpack (my one piece of high-end gear) and on a rainy day the inside of that pack is the only thing that is completely clean and dry.
