Another one bites the dust..... literally!
Last night on my way home, I was passing stopped traffic on the right as I usually do. The problem was that I misjudged the distance of the car next to me. I the left side of my bars nicked the mirror of the car. This sent my bars and of course my wheel to the left. I did not go over the bars, I just went down. Hard.
I landed on my right side and slid a few feet. My right elbow took the brunt of it. Lots of road rash! I picked myself up off the road an picked up my bike as well. I thought I would try to ride home but when I picked up my bike, something in my left hand hurt very very bad.
The motorist whose car I hit asked if I was ok and I just waved her on. same for the person in the car behind her. I tested my left hand a couple more times and determined that I either sprained it really bad or broke it. I called my wife and had her meet me at the gas station across the street.
She took me straight to ER. I sat for 3 hours in horrid pain before I saw a doctor. Two shots for pain (the first, morphine, didn't work... morphine doesn't work on me) and a dozen xrays later it was determined that I had indeed broke my hand, but my elbow (which was swollen to baseball size) was not.
So, I'm off the bike for a while. I must live my commuting through you all now!
pix coming soon.

Know all too well the emergency room lately, but my many broken ribs and punctured lung were from a frolic with my favorite mtb group on an unfamiliar trail at 11 pm ...
Must say percasett (sp) in the IV is a wonderful thang!
Hopes to a speedy recovery!
It's been two weeks for me and they told me I need to stay off 4-6 weeks (grrrr). Was going to try a mild commute this week but still have a rib not quite set yet .... sigh.
Maybe next week ...
Get well

Heal fast. Or at least heal well.

Ouch! I feel your pain... literally! I ate it hard on Tuesday by going around a turn too steeply. I struck my pedal on the ground and (I think) that must have popped my front wheel off the ground. I skidded about about 6 feet on my left elbow and knee and ended up with a fractured right wrist. Here's to a mutually speedy recovery!

Hope you recover completely and soon, and I hope you're back commuting and generlaly cycling. Please be careful about filtering when you get back out there, and please don't filter on the right!

SUCKS.
As an amateur SCCA racer I can judge what a drive rdoing, but not always. In your case I wont' be passing on the right. It be on the left, on the side walk, through the mall, whatever keeps me safe. My judgement where to pass. In fact, in the left is usually less safe because no room.
I even blow reds when it's safe. And on a bike I can see better than on car when it's safe.
Bsically, I don't care much about traffic law, nor do cops. It's all about safety. And if I can bike sefly, then it's all good.
Of course thouse, things like happen to you are unavoidable. That one will heal, I hope the bike is ok.

Hey everyone thanks for the kind words. Aykew- get well!
I got my cast today, its a velcro on deal. Much better than the regular kind! I'm off the bike for 6 weeks and when I get back, it'll be on a better, safer route!
thanx for all the get-wells and advice!

Sorry to hear that man. I saw a guy the other day clip a telephone pole with the left side of his handlebars. He went down pretty hard also. He was riding on the sidewalk in the rain, with no helmet. It was pretty funny at the time. Guess I'd think differently if I got it like you did....

Well its almost three weeks later. I'm wearing a splint now that looks like an athletic brace more than anything. Three more weeks to go!
