Best cable lock?
 

Looking for a good cable lock as a secondary lock in combination to the Ulock. What is the best and thickest cable lock there is out there? I would like something that coils up for easy storage in the bag. Links and pics please. Thanks.

The thickest cable lock I've seen is an 18mm lock sold at MEC.

There is no cable lock which coils up for easy storage which is good. They all can be cut in less than three seconds, according to the latest Cycling Plus lock tests. Cable locks are good for keeping honest people honest. If you really feel the need for one get whatever is cheapest, it'll off the same security as an expensive one.

I guess a slight shift in the topic now would be what is a good light chain for secondary locking up? I was thinking of something less then 4lbs as my Ulock already is ~4lbs. Probably 2lbs or less would be better if there is such an option.

Look at either the Abus Steel-o-flex 1000 (or a higher number) or the Trelock Motorrad MS650. Both of these are armored cables which did very well (passed the 5 minute manual attack test) on Cycling Pluses latest lock test.

Edit: I did asearch for both company brands but found nothing. Abus only came up with the Kryptonite Faggatabouit with some review in 2004. I'll check a little more before I rack out for rest but if you saw it a direct link wuld help.

I hate the coiling cable locks. They're hard to get around your bike, and they scratch it too. I have one like this I got at Lowes:

I think mine is not as beefy and was maybe $28. Kryptonite has so many choices, both in cable width as well as length. Decide what you want and find the model.

Mine coils up into about a 12-15" circle which fits in my smallish messenger bag. Mine is a 6' though, so a 4' might coil up smaller. Once uncoiled, it's completely straight. 6' is more than you need though, 5' would probably be enough to get both wheels, frame and a nice pole. I put my helmet through mine too.

The main thing I like about it is that it cinches down as tight you as you want. It coils up nicely and comes with a velcro tie to keep it coiled. I've even used it to strap stuff to the rear rack when I had forgot some tie downs.

what do people reckon is better, the Steel-O-Flex Granit X-Plus 1050 or Kryptonites HardWire™ 2510 Key Cable? I haven't heard of Abus until now and when i saw it in the store the other day i thought it was a cheap chinese lock, but now see that its one of the best you can get.

also does anyone know about those anti theft things you can get for your wheels and i think seatpost, they replace your quick release with an allen key which is slightly smaller or bigger than the standard sizes. I was thinking of getting these so i wouldn't have to lock my wheels up, then maybe i could get a smaller lock like those mini D locks. But i worry that these things could easily be taken off with pliers or something, or that the person would ruin the thread of the nut in trying to get them off and you'd then be stuck with your wheels locked to your bike.
