Nexus Hub Question (x-post)

I just built up my Cross Check with the Nexus 8 speed hub. The Revo shifter is still out of stock but I would like to ride the bike as a single speed until I install the shifter. How can I manually change the gears?

Doesn't the cable need to be kept at tension for everything except one gear? You might have to clamp it off or something.

You could just pull on the cable, but without something (i.e., the shifter) to hold the cable in place, the hub will always revert to the lowest gear b/c the shifting mechanism in the hub is spring loaded. At least that's how my Nexus 7 and Sturmey-Archer 3 speed hubs work (though the SAs revert to the highest gear).

You really need the shifter to adjust it correctly. You align two hash marks while the shifter is in 4.

You could clamp down a short cable (say to the chainstay) that holds the hub in that "yellow to yellow" alignment. That is 4th gear, and should be dialed in correctly. Maybe a p-clip with a bolt/nut/lockwasher.

Warning: the thing might totally slip out of gear on you, so this is potentially very dangerous.

Good luck.

If you're looking for just the shifter try these guys.
I couldn't find it anywhere but they said they had many in stock.

As soon as I get my drop bars I'll have a slightly used Revo shifter/brake lever combo for sale.

If it's easy enough to swap the cable and you have some spare parts kicking around, you could do something like this:

T400 shifter.jpg

Or if you just want to keep it in one specific gear, use a screw into one of the fender/rack eyelets to tie it down like you would the end of any other cable. A shifter would just give you a bit more fine adjustment.
