One more reason to ride a bike
|
First that assumes we are breaking the law. I don't do so as a cyclists and unless you count going fast enough not to hold up traffic I don't do so when driving either. Now I wonder if there is an increase in cyclists if they'll really start enforcing traffic laws all over, on cyclists and drivers. In my little town they seem to be giving cyclists warnings sometimes but don't consistently enforce it. There seems to be a few weeks where they really crack down and then this weekend I saw at least 200 cyclists or more just blow through the 3 way stop in front of my home without any notice. Unless you count all the cars slamming on their brakes and honking when they were cut off by the cyclists.
According to the article Texas where I live has similar laws especialy on DUIs. Apparantly that doesnt' stop tons of people from getting DUIs all the time here. There is a legal show on the radio sunday night and it seems every other caller is a DUI. Just over 98k people were arrested for drunk driving in 04' in texas (the most recent year I can find stats). The same site you point out states it costs an average of 10k for your first DUI. http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com...0RideHome.aspx Out of twenty people in my office that I know pretty well 11 have multiple points on their license and 3 have DUI's 1 had 2 DUI's. The guy with two DUI's has a 60k+ sports car he is going to go BK with soon. It is a rather small sample but not one of these people could care less about increased fines. |
Yeah, sounds more like a reason to obey the damn law to me.
"Traffic" can go to heck. I wouldn't feel obligated to rob the teller if I were in a queue of bank robbers so that I wouldn't hold them up, I feel absolutely no obligation to break the law to get out of the way of speeders. In fact, on 70 MPH roads, I set the cruise at 60 to 65 and camp in the right lane. It's very relaxing. BTW, blazer, sounds to me like the could NOT care less about increased fines. |

[snip] BTW, blazer, sounds to me like the could NOT care less about increased fines. And BTW Mr Grammar, the sentence was fine as-written. |
Go enough over the speed limit in The Netherlands and they take you car! I don't know what the cut-off speed is, but it has to be at least 30 MPH over the limit. There are enough dumb people that push this limit and even some government ministers have lost their nice rides. 5 MPH over the limit and the camera on the highway goes click and sends you a nice fine in the mail (I think it is about $200). There are hundereds if not thousands of cameras along the highway, it is knowing which ones are active and when that realy matters. I don't speed when I drive in the The Netherlands. If you have a rental car, they will gladly pass the bill along to Hetz, etc and they will pass it along to you for an additional $75 handling fee. My dad found out the hard way.
One thing about the USA fines is that I am suprised that the DUI fines are only $1000 per year at worst. You'd think they would realy crank it up on those. I'd think a DUI is much wose that 25 miles over the limit. Happy riding, André |

And BTW Mr Grammar, the sentence was fine as-written. Actually the sentence is exactly the opposite of the intended meaning, as written. Obviously, I could care less about whether someone shoots me. I could care less about whether someone nukes my hometown. I care quite a lot about those things, so obviously I COULD care LESS. Things that I don't care at all about, I could NOT care less about. |

Illinois will begin using photo radar in freeway work zones in July. Second offense tickets are $1,000 with license suspension. Beginning in July the State of Illinois will use speed cameras in areas designated as "Work Zones" on major freeways. Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed a $375.00 ticket for the FIRST offense, but he SECOND offense will cost $1000.00 and comes with a 90-Day suspension. *Drivers will also receive demerit points against their license, which allows insurance companies to raise their rates. *This represents the harshest penalty structure yet for a city or state using PHOTO enforcement. The State will begin with TWO camera vans issuing tickets in work zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH. Photographs of both the Driver's face and License plate are taken. for more info: http://www.dot.state.il.us/press/r033005.html |
