One pair a day. I wish I could wear them more than one day, but that doesn't seem possible. Only in emergency situations (forgot to do laundry) will I consider pulling a pair out of the dirty clothes.

My wool socks and jersey go about a week between washes.

I do the same, but the shorts I wear are light weight swimming trunks and I do wear underwear! At work I cool down in my office for a bit and then switch into pants/slacks and a polo style shirt (I LOVE business casual, easy on the wallet, easy for summer commuting). During the recent heat wave on some days I wish I'd brought not just a clean shirt and socks, but also some dry underwear. You sure can get sweaty after a hot and fast 20 minutes ride. Many nights when I get more my daughter want to go swimming in the pool, so I'll wear the same short in the pool (without the underwear ofcourse). I figure a bath in bomine laced water should kill any existing bacteria. By morning the shorts are ready to go again.

If I go on a long ride and I wear my riding shorts. Riding shorts I wash the EVERY time I wear them, but those are designed to be worn comando style... that makes a critical difference.

As a side note during the cooler spring weather I jsut wore my work cloths and a T shirt just in case I got a little sweaty, and then put on the clean shirt once I cooled down a bit. This Fall will be my first Fall/Winter attempting a commute. It will be interesting to see how far into winter I can ride without causing undo risk to my life. IT will depend a good deal on when we starting getting our regular lake effect snow.

Happy riding,
André

germaphobic? I'm a freaking petry dish full of bacteria.
It is more the fact that I ride 3-4 hrs a day and sweat like crazy in the summer. Wearing one of those pairs two days would be flat out disgusting and stinky. Ew!

I have six pairs of bibs so one a day. Not a germophobe here but my commute is 22 miles r/t and I get very sweaty. I just cant imagine wearing the same shorts the next day for cleanliness issues. That'll be like wearing the same underwear two days in a row.

Wear one pair until they get crunchy and start to crack, then buy a new pair.
Just like socks.

Some of you guys remind me of high school football practice. By Thursday, you could stand up your practice jersey and pants by themselves.

Nasty.

This reminds me of a roomate I once had in the military. This guy will get home from work, Civil Engineers (they dig ditches and stuff), dirty and sweaty. He'll take a shower then put on the same underwear he had on the whole day. Nasty, nasty stuff.

EDIT: I don't mean this is what you do AEO. You just reminded me of him, thats all.

Reminds me of one of those demotivator posters: Invention is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration, which is probably why engineers smell so bad most of the time.

Wait... You're supposed to wear those lycra shorts commando style? I never knew that one. I always wondered how to deal with the underwear lines. hahaha.

I just ride home in whatever I wore riding in. Not always cycling shorts, but often it is.

Any padded short, Lycra or baggy-mountain with liner.

Until April, I commuted 36 mi/day, 5 days a week. Wore one pair of shorts all week. Had that job for 5 years. I rented a locker at the local health club to keep the stuff in (which didn't smell too good) and had it dry out in an unused bathroom at home. I also rode weekends. My new job doesn't let me ride as often, but the commute is longer.

I have better things to do with my time than constantly wash the 11 or 12 shorts and jersey combos I'd go through every week -- especially since I have 2 pair of shorts, 4 jerseys, and have no interest in having a closetfull of either. No one can smell you when you're on the road, and you can shower when you arrive.

I only have one pair of bike shorts.

When I get home from work all hot and sweaty, I hop in the shower. I take the shorts with me. They get a quick wash with a bit of anti-bacterial soap, a nice rinse, I squeeze them out, and hang them up.

They are dry in the morning, usually. Sometimes they are a tiny bit damp. If so, I put them in the dryer for 10 minutes, or, if it's warm, I wear them slightly damp, for the evaporative cooling effect.

I find it to be faster, easier, and less wear on the shorts, then the washer/dryers.

Wool shirts (for the winter) can get about 3 day's use before I wash them. They get washed by hand in the sink. I rotate through about 3 shirts.

Poly shirts (for the summer) get washed after any serious ride (they stink). I rotate through about 3 (cheap $10 poly polos from Target).

If I don't have clean shorts, I ride in regular underwear (which is my default riding attire anyway). Wearing dirty shorts... yuck! Let's erase that thought from our mind and never mention it again.

However, if I were a guy, I might have felt differently, but let's not go into the details of this either.

I wear the same shorts for a round trip (18 miles). I average between 1 and 2 days between washes. Jerseys get washed after one day's use.

I'm not vicariously putting my butt on my head!

I wear a pair a day. I'll wear a pair twice before washing if I have to.

This is what I do too. Just alternate pairs by day with 2 days of drying rack between them. I have a 30 km round-trip commute and find this usage scenario just works for me. They do dry out all day on the bike between rides.
