One pair of shorts a day?

Do you guys let your shorts just dry out during the day and wear the same ones home, or do you bring a spare, clean pair of shorts in your panniers for the trip home?

I ride to work in jeans, wear those jeans all day at work, and then ride home in them. So only "one pair" for me.

abmtnbkr 07-12-07 10:06 PM

I wear the same short to and from but I never use the same shorts two days in a row without washing them.

This sounds like the best solution, definitely not two days in a row.

I'll gross you all out and say that I wore the same cycling shorts to and from work for 5 days straight without washing them. but it's only a 25min ride each way. I just mount them on my helmet which goes on my desk to dry. By the end of the day they're totally dry and don't smell at all.
I don't get it, my gloves start to stink before my shorts or socks do.

mind you, I haven't gotten a rash or anything from it.

I wear a different pair home which I bring in my bag. Due to the environment I work and the fact that I'm soaked when I get to work even after my cool down I have to seal them up in ziplocks in my arkels while I work all day which leaves them a little too moist and if I don't febreeze them a little ripe.

thelazywon 07-12-07 10:28 PM

I really don't give a damn whether I wash them or not.

slowjoe66 07-12-07 10:32 PM

I ride in non-cycling shorts, just regular Dockers like or cargo shorts, and then wear them to work. I get a little dirty at work and start before daylight (so who cares if my shorts are dirty or a bit sweaty and stinky)when I start my job. No worries.

There is some clown who changes in our work locker room who stinks up the who basement--- his clothes always smell like sour rot. He is an otherwise clean guy--- but I almost want to vomit when I enter the changing area.

Probably someone who forgets his clothes in the washer for a day or two before he dries them, or something. That smell is disgusting.

Wow...that *is* gross.

FWIW, while your shorts may dry out, you've undoubtedly got a flourishing colony of millions of happy bacteria in them. One little nick, scratch, or ingrown hair and you'll have a nasty infection/saddle sore.

ItsJustMe 07-13-07 05:26 AM

I only have 3 pair of shorts, so I wear the same pair in and back, and I alternate so I only have to wash once a week, IE pair 1 monday, 2 tuesday, 1 again wed, 2 again thu, 3 fri (pair 3 is an old Nashbar pair and the fabric is lighter, so I try to wear it less so it won't wear out as fast).

DataJunkie 07-13-07 05:43 AM

Why wouldn't you wear the same shorts in and back? It's not like I bring 2 pairs of shorts for all day rides.
I never wear a dirty pair of shorts without washing them from one day to the other. Heck even when I owned one pair I would wash it nightly and now that I own 4 it does not matter. It should soon increase to 5 after I hit my next goal.

Some of my bibs get worn for 3 days at a time....and some of my jerseys still stink even after washing, in fact they seem to be rotting on me....maybe that's why I am always riding alone?

truman 07-13-07 07:03 AM

I generally wear the same shorts for a couple of days before washing. There's time at work for them to dry completely. No saddle sores except for the ones I got from a pair of new (freshly washed) Fox MTB shorts.

pj7 07-13-07 07:13 AM

I wear the same pair 4 days in a row and usually only wash them after the second day. I have been losing weight so rapidly (used to be well over 350lbs now under 300lbs) that I cannot constitute buying any more shorts that the one pair I have the fits me now. They are moy only XXL pair of shorts.
I have 3 pair of XXXL shorts and none of them fit me even close to being comfortable now. In fact, one of them was only worn twice, and at $50 a pair I feel I have alot of wasted money sitting there. And I don't wish to make that same mistake again.
If I'm still wearing XXL comfortably come the end of August I'll buy a second pair, but not until then.

fillthecup 07-13-07 07:41 AM

I'll use shorts for two or three commutes (10 mile roundtrip) before washing, but just once for long or particularly sweaty rides.

Cleanliness is great, but the idea of washing shorts after every ride sounds unnecessary to me. I'll let those bacterial colonies give my immune system a workout.

Flimflam 07-13-07 07:59 AM

Depends on the heat and how much they suffer. I wear regular shorts, I switch them out as I see fit. Recently I've been leaving my shorts on to wear while in the office, so I tend to switch them out more when this happens. I always wear the same pair home that I wore in, I dry my sweaty clothes on my monitors and always shower before leaving in the morning, which reduces a possibly nasty smell.

oboeguy 07-13-07 08:06 AM

New shorts every day unless I'm desperate. Sometimes I forget to lay my shorts out at work to dry and have to ride icky shorts home, but usually I'll remember to hang them on my bike (in the office, of course) to dry along with whatever else I was wearing (jersey, base layer, etc) on the way in.

AEO 07-13-07 09:15 AM

I've never done the 5 days straight thing again, most is 2 days in a row before I wash them. I have to change shirts and underwear everyday, but the cycling shorts are no big deal since my back gets sweaty a lot more than the shorts.
You people are too germophobic. My immune system is top notch thanks to the years of unsanitary living conditions I brought upon myself :-D

cccorlew 07-13-07 09:18 AM

I a day, but sometimes sif it's a cool day and i take it really easy I'll go 2, but not often.
