The Ultimate Bike Light Setup, with pics!

What's up People

I'm new to the site, thought I share some pics and this super cool light tip with everyone. I call it "The Ultimite Bike Light Setup".

One day while riding in the streets of Brooklyn, NY at night, a car pass me on the left hand side. I had a cheep head light on my bar and taillight on my bike at the time. I'm sure the driver saw me, but he did not. He made a wild right turn at the corner and almost killed me. It was like I was invisible or something, cause the driver made his turn as if I was not there. This kinda garbage happened to me many times before, so I did something about it. I Got tired of wasting money on those cheap light systems that use AA or AAA batteries, that don't work. Motorist in New York act like they own the streets. They think bikers should ride on the sidewalk and get out their way. Most of them don't even know how to drive their cars. They try to intimidate bikers off the road, but not me, cause my wife and I rule the streets at night now. Motorist see us coming and move out of our way fast, and they respect us now like never before. I have so much more fun riding at night now, plus I know motorist see me.

Did a search on the net for the best bike light systems and found this website https://www.NiteRider.com They have a light system called the NiteRider Storm H.I.D. The Storm H.I.D system has everything I was looking for in a light system. The H.I.D. system uses an ultra bright 10-watt metal halide arc lamp, which burns equivalent to a 30-40 watt halogen bulb with a clear blue/white light you only expect to see from the headlights of luxury European automobiles. They also have a powrful taillight system that is 20 to 30 times brighter than most stand alone taillights. I purchased 2 NiteRider Storm H.I.D helmet systems, 2 NiteRider TrailRat systems, and 6 NiteRider Taillight systems.

Our bike light setup is so cool, I have to let other bikers know about it, so they can get their own also. You may be saying "why 6 taillights, 3 for each of you?" I did not buy 6 at the same time, just 2 taillights, one for me and my wife. I did something two days later after buying them that made me order 4 more taillights the next week. One night when my wife was not going out to ride with me, I did something. I connected her taillight and my taillight together on one battery to see if it would work, and it did. The 2 light was so bright, you could use it as a flashlight around the house. I called NiteRider the next morning to ask them can this be done to see what they would say, even though I know it works. When I ask the question about the 2 taillights, the guy said "WOW!, I did not think of that one, hold on for a minute so I can see if it works". He came back on the phone and said "no it does not work, cause part of the wire is in the way and it won't fit". He suggested that I purchase another battery, I said no thanks Sir. So I'm going to share some pics and a powerful taillight setup tip with you fellow bikers.

Below are a few pics of our NiteRider light setup.

Here are some pics of our Giro helmets with the NiteRider Storm H.I.D system.

This is my helmet.

This is my wife's helmet.

Another pic of my helmet.

Here's a pic of two TrailRat 2.0 systems, Chargers and batteries for the Storm and TrailRat lights.

Here's a pic of my 3 taillight setup. Yes, that's one battery running 3 light's at one time.

Here's a pic with both Storm lights and TrailRat lights on at the same time. The picture was taking from a side angel just to give you an idea of how they look. The Storm is so bright, that motorist won't play no games with you. The Storm has a beautiful clear blue/white color that will get everone's attention on the streets. If you live in Brooklyn, NY you may have seen my wife and I speeding through the street at night.

Peace.

If you would like to have "The Ultimite Bike Light Setup". Below are easy to follow steps so you can have the best helmet light and the most powerful taillight system in the world.

Step 1.

You must purchase a 2003 Trial Rat 2.0 light system with the knew Surlok connectors. I purchased two Trail Rat 2.0 systems just for the batteries and straps. My wife and I don't even use the 10w halogen light, unless we're hanging out with some friend's in Prospect Park. We have an extra battery so a friend can use it the TrailRat on their bar. The Storm is so bright, it's all we need. When drivers speed pass me in anger, I just light them up.

You can order the new NiteRider TrailRat 2.0 system for $99.99 at https://www.performancebike.com/shop/....cfm?SKU=14103

Step 2.

Now you will need to purchase the MicroBrute 4.5 Hour Charging System for SurLok Connections. This charger will charge your battery fast and lets you know when it's done charging. The charger that comes with the TrailRat 2.0 system needs to go right in the trash after you open the box. Why? cause you will be waiting forever for your battery to charge with that bootleg cheep charger, plus you risk over charging the battery as well.

You can purchase the NiteRider 6v MicroBrute Charge System for SurLok Connections for $49.99 at https://bikeworld.com/niteride/charger.htm

Step 3.

You must purchase 3 NiteRider Tail Light Systems for $59.99 each, that's a total of $179.97 at https://www.performancebike.com/shop/....cfm?SKU=14104

Step 4.

Charge your new TrailRat 2.0 battery using the new fast 6v MicroBrute Charge System.

Step 5.

Connect all 3 taillight cables together like the pic below.

Step 6.

Now plug in the battery to the taillight input. The 3 taillights will now glow at the same time, hold down the 3 black buttons on each taillight so they change to flash mode.

Step 7.

Now install the taillights to your seatpost as shown in the pics below. Make sure that you use the straps to secure the cables to the your frame.

Step 8.

Now find a good place on your bike to put the battery. My battery is in a great place on my bike hidden from view, the pic below will give you an idea of where to put yours. Once you find a good place for it, strap it in good and your set.

Step 9.

Order the NiteRider Storm HID Light System for $379.99 at https://www.performancebike.com/shop/....cfm?SKU=14098

Step 10.

Purchase a quality helmet of your choice, I like Giro helmets.

Step 11.

Charge the NiteRider battery. When it's finished charging, put the Storm system on your new helmet, and strap it on good. Turn on your 3 taillights, and go have fun.

Peace.

Thanks dexmax

Glad you like the light setup, motorist respect my wife and I on the road like never before now. We had our Storm H.I.D systems for 2 years and the super taillight setups for 1 year. Sure would like to see other people from Brooklyn, NY with a Storm and taillight setup. That would be cool to have like 15 bikers riding through the streets of NY at the same time at night. Everyone using high quality light systems, that would be real cool.

Peace.

Wow,
I am impressed. I have been thinking of getting one of those tailights, and you went and got 3. One of these days, I really need to get one of those.

Trust me, your going to like this light very much. 1 is powerful, but 3 on at the same time is something else.

When my wife and I ride at night, we have the most fun ever  Traffic behind be like "WOW, you guys have some bright light's". When they pass us to the front our Storm H.I.D light's be shining all in their mirrors.

I highly recommend the 3 taillight setup. My wife and I taillights are brighter than motorcycle taillights. When they see the Storm H.I.D, they be like "WOW!, that's hot".

Peace.

Very cool....what you said about Bklyn drivers is correct. They pay no attention to cyclists.

Where do you ride in Bklyn?

What's up Cadd

Glad you like the light setup.

We be riding all over the streets in Brooklyn. Most of the time in Prospect Park at night, not just going around the park, but we found this cool trail in the park that is fun, if you have a helmet light or bar light on your bike. Sometimes we go to Coney Island just to pass thru for the long ride. We also ride to Central Park in the day or night. The day time be cool because a lot of bikers be there, which makes it more fun.

I've been to Battery Park one time, with a group of 15 other bikers and that was in 1995. That place have a bunch of purple lights and it was a lot of fun because we all had nice bikes with neon lights at the time. The neon light was called "Bike Glow" they don't make it anymore, but it was a cool light.
Most of those bikers that I use to ride with, went there separate ways in life, so I just be hanging out with my wife. It would be cool to meet other bikers from Brooklyn on this forum, so that we can form a bike crew and rule the streets.

When it comes to riding thru the streets, I'm a road warrior. Which means I'm fast, don't get tired, and never bored when it comes to riding. If I have to ride by myself, I still have fun.

Where do you be riding, and also do you have any bike partners that roll with you?

Peace.

Sorry for the late reply. The 3 NiteRider taillight's and small 6V battery is about the same weight of a small 12oz can of Pepsi.

WOW.... I did the math and you spent over $700.00 dollars for lights! Amazing. That's more money than my 2 junk commuter bikes put together. While I do like your setup, it won't work for me as a commuter/shopper since there is NO way I'm leaving all those light on the bike while it's parked on the bike rack.

I can still use those lights anyway for when I'm just crusing along at night. I'm still thinking of getting one Nightrider but with a handlebar mount. One more thing.

Your a brave guy to be biking at night with those lights in Brooklyn! Still. I'm jealous.

Hi Dahon.Steve

Not $700 dollars, but $1369.98

2 NiteRider Storm H.I.D Light Systems. = $759.98
2 NiteRider TrailRat II Light Systems. = $199.98
6 NiteRider Taillight's $59.99 each = $359.94
1 NiteRider 6v MicroBrute Charge System for SurLok Connections for $49.99

My wife and I have the same NiteRider light setup, Total cost $1369.98

Can't wait for it to get warmer, we're going to have so much fun this summer. I'm going to film video and take photo's of everything.

PricePoint is selling the NiteRider Storm and Blowtorch for $299.99 The Trail is 89.98 https://www.pricepoint.com/lights.html

That's more money than my 2 junk commuter bikes put together.

Your a brave guy to be biking at night with those lights in Brooklyn! Still. I'm jealous.
My wife and I ride with the Lord, if you know what I mean. So there is nothing to be afraid of, I fear no man.

I'm with you, Ringo. When it comes to respect on the roadway, I spell it H-I-D.

I've got the Light and Motion ARC, but I've thought of adding the helmet-mounted light also.

Even with just the one, no one turns in front of me now.

more lights is good, but i've found that motion of some kind really helps too. i've put one of those little square jobs with the three different light settings (on, blink, and the back and forth thing). my wife have a green one on the front too. in conjunction with her niterider light, she's ok. i've got one of those cateye LED lights, it's great for the price but in no way adds up to her niterider. i want to get a niterider too, but the cash flow isn't flowin fast enough right now.

when it comes to riding, my rule is this: i don't care how much i spend, as long as it helps keep me save. we too ride with the lord, but i'm trying to make his job a little easier.

granted, i live in a small town so the drivers here are much more considerate than in NY. in the end, you've got to do what you've got to do and sometimes that costs money.

E...
ps. don't forget rear view mirrors. that way if they can't see you, you can at least see them.

Yes, the HID lights are all blue-white. The light is produced in HID by an electric discharge, whichever brand it is.

Sometimes cars would turn in front of me with my old halogen lights. That never happens now.

Awesome.....

The first time I saw a cyclist riding with an HID system I honestly
thought it was some guy on a motorcycle it was so bright.

It was the Cateye Stadium light, which was the first HID light
for cyclists that was commercially available.

I like your idea for the three tail-lights on one battery.

I think I want to get one of those things.

Right now I'm using two Cateye EL300s (the second one should
be here soon). The days have been long enough that I've not
had to really use it much but as the days get shorter I'll need
real lights and I'll probably follow your suggestion as soon as
I can afford it.

I especially like your HID lights because they are helmet mounted.
A $300 light would vanish pretty quick in downtown Minneapolis
where I live - thieves see nice things and they tend to take them.

I can leave it mounted on the helmet and just take it with me into
the office. Cool.

Can you show us some pictures of the batteries mounted on the
bike so I can get a feel for how they are hooked up?

What's up aliensporebomb

Can you show us some pictures of the batteries mounted on the
bike so I can get a feel for how they are hooked up?

Here are some more pics of how the Battery is connected on my bike. I've post a picture on the 1st page on this topic of where I put the taillight battery, maybe you did not notice it. Where ever I go people don't even notice that a battery in connected to my bike.

You can put battery for the Storm H.I.D helmet system in a back pack. The Storm battery does go on the bike frame, cause you would have the helmet version. So you can keep the Storm battery in your back pack while at work. When you leave, put on you helmet and back pack, plug the cables together and your set.

The is the area where the 6v battery will be connected. As you can see no battery is in place yet.

This photo shows the battery as I'm putting it in place.

In this picture you can see how the taillight battery is in place on the bike frame in a good spot.

This picture view gives you an idea of how I've straped it to the frame.

In this photo you can't even tell I have the 6v battery strapped on my bike frame.

Also, the NiteRider taillihgt comes with a quick release screw, so you can take the taillights off your bike if you lock it up out side fast and easy.

Peace.

Just got my new Shimano XT components, Race Face Prodigy XC stem, Race Face air alloy riser bar, and a new clear NiteRider taillight today, so you guys know I'm very happy. I'm upgrading from LX to full XT components, can't wait to hook everything up and go for a spin.

I'm thinking about changing the Prodigy XC stem and get the Easton EA50 stem for the 10 degree rise. I'm sending back the Prodigy XC stem cause I purchase the wrong size. I need a 120mm stem, but I purchase a 130mm stem.

Here's a pic of my bike and new gear.

If you can recall, I don't use the Trail Rat II handlebar light at all. My wife and I both use the Storm H.I.D systems all the time. We have an extra 6v battery that a friend can use with one of the Trail Rat II handlebar lights when riding with us. The only time we may use the Trail Rat system with the Storm H.I.D light at the same time, is when we're riding deep in the very dark areas of prospect park.

Here's a pic of my new clear NiteRider taillight.

I did not know the taillight come in a clear body. The light blinks red, but it's going back to the store. Get the red color body, it's better than the clear body.

On the supergo website, the ad for the light was in a red body color, but I got a clear one. It's the same light, I just like the red body color better.

Peace.

Sorry for the late reply. The 3 NiteRider taillight's and small 6V battery is about the same weight of a small 12oz can of Pepsi.

Peace.

I'm actually asking about the whole system, as far as wieght is concerned. How much does the whole thing weigh?

well, sounds like your system is pretty awesome!!

while i agree that HID is prety cool (the blue light) i personally looked at it and decided it was too expensive and a little too high tech...

i bought a 20W spot halogen lamp, a smart charger and NiMH batteries and built my own battery pack - cost about $120 total with a run time of 2:15 -- a comparable commercial setup would be $150-400 (plus i can modify my system myself).

i think the most important thing is MOUNTING the headlight on the HELMET! that way i can shine my light on motorists if they aproach from the side or look like they may turn left in front of me.

note: although i love riding with the system, dealing the the battery and all for every ride is a little much so i ride with the Cateye LEDs for most commutes.

i have never tried to bright taillights, but i think i might...
