My 226 mile commute this weekend...

hey all..just wanted to share this with those that would appreciate it...

I'm a photographer in Long Beach, CA and I go to nearly all my assignments by bicycle (xtracycle). This weekend, I'm going on my furthest assignment. I got a call from the CEO of an investment company that specializes in socially conscious investing (Blue Marble for those that are curious), that wanted me to do a documentary style portrait of his family.

The rub was that he was in San Luis Obispo, 226 miles from Long Beach. We talked logistics and I figured I could take a combination of my bike, bus and train to their home. He loved the idea. So that's what I'm preparing for today.

I modified one of my Pelican cases by putting on Ortlieb mounting hardware on it so that it would fit on my rear rack.

Check out my blog for all the wackiness...

How many miles are you going to be riding? That's a hell of a commute man! Good luck out there.

Russ, I read about you in the LA Times. Interesting article on the bicyling aspects. Then another time I ran across your flickr photos by random and then two and two came together that it was you.

Nice idea... I'm working on a similar idea for my bike. Your use of a Pelican case is probably a smarter than my idea... I bought a plastic toolbox for $8 from Wally World and lined it with 1" high-density foam. I was able to make a comparment that will hold my D50 with 300mm f4 lens attached, as well as another space for other odds and ends (a couple wide angles, SB800, spare batteries, spare cards, etc). I still haven't gotten it mounted on my bike though, the first rack I ordered wouldn't fit (silly me forgot to take into account the disc brakes on my MTB). I have another rack on order that's designed for bikes with disc brakes. Here's a picture of my trunk....

Oh wow, I hope you're riding the San Luis Obispo end. That area is absolutely beautiful. I'd think about staying a while.

If you're riding PCH from Santa Barbara to SLO, you'll end up doing one of the most beautiful century rides I can think of. Consider hanging out in Morrow Bay after you get done.

If you can't tell, I'm jealous.
