I was chased by a small dog for about 200 yards yesterday. Those Snausers (sp?) are viscious. Doesn't sound as bad as this hog though.

Yeah, I think those little schnausers and others like them are the ones I worry about the most. Seems like they always have a bad attitude when bikes are around.

But I think I'd rather hear their constant yapping than the crazed, echoing, wild squeal of a rabid hog after me. :D

I'm glad things generally run off. I haven't run into a hog like that. We spooked a bear similarly a couple of weeks ago. I'm glad it ran off instead of standing its ground. Might run into a hog sometime. We saw one roadkilled recently. They've scared me a good deal in the woods. More scary than bears I think anyway. Always look much more eager to rip into my spleen than the bears!

Wow, when I saw the subject line, I just assumed that "hog" was a typo for "dog". No wild pigs in Idaho.

I remember when I was cranking on it, panting trying to get the hell outta there, I kept gasping to my self "Its not no dog..(gasp)..Its not no dog!!" :D

Since then I've had nightmares of wild, echoeing pig squeals following me when I'm riding my bike.

Depends on what gear you're in. Watt is a measurement of power. Pretty good defintion here:

400 watts in 53/15 is going to produce more speed than 400 watts in 44/15.

Whoa, I've been charged by wild pigs several times, but always while fully armed. I can't imagine being confronted while in spandex and armed with a water bottle...

This isn't a hog story but it reminded me about yesterday morning. When I ride to work it is still dark. About a mile into my ride I hear the tell-tale sounds of paws on the sidewalk then the street. I looked back but it was too dark but it did look like a large dog behind me. I put on the speed and the damned thing easily kept up with me and was gaining. It started to close in on me. I yelled "NO!" and it suddenly stopped and I assume went back. That was one dog I didn't bother chasing back. I'm glad it wasn't vicious 'cause it would've got me. It just wanted to chase the bike.

That would definitely have scared the pants damage out of me. Aggressive beasts, at least when cornered or frightened.

My brother in law is a corn and cotton farmer in South Texas. He traps and kills the javalinas b/c they will wreck a cotton field in minutes. Amazing sausage.

Most of my relatives live in central Italy, where my mother is from - they have wild boar by the gajillion, and my cousin, who is a road cyclist, has stories like this. They are not to be messed with; they only attack "in defense" but they're touchy. I've never run afoul of one. But I can vouch for the comment that they are absolutely superb as dinner.

At 300 lbs or more - if it charges you, would it be possible to just side step it? I can't imagine these things turning on a dime at full speed.

We have plenty of wild hogs here in NE Texas too, though I haven't heard of them chasing any cyclists. The local weekly paper reported sightings of herds of over 30 of them just SW of another small town ~6 miles away- that town happens to be to our NE!

A couple of months ago, I saw 3 run across the edge of our front yard one night. Since then I've kept a 12 ga with slugs close by at home. There's been no call for it yet.

They've torn up several yards in our neighborhood- including ours. Found lots of fresh hog "pellets" in the front yard for several weeks in June & July.

And this business about "wild hogs prefer to run away", or "they only attack in defense or if provoked"- Don't count on that! At all. Not even a little bit. This means you. They can't read what they're supposed to do, and a lot of 'em wouldn't follow the instructions even if they could read. The fact is that while a certain percentage may folow those guidelines, no one can predict what an individual hog may do at any time. Avoid if possible, and ride a fast bike.:thumb: No foolin', you could get *badly* hurt. They're bad about ripping open the inside of a standing persons thighs if they get the chance- can you say "femoral artery"?:twitchy:

Well, first I watched MonsterQuest on the History channel and saw the escaped pythons flourishing in Florida, growing into very large snakes who can eat dogs, cats, alligators (!!!), etc.

Now you tell us the wild hogs (monster size in my opinion) are running around. Don't think I'll want to visit Florida for any bike rides. Glad you're okay. Be careful out there.

There is I believe a "motorcycle hits a bear" video on YouTube, but I don't like to watch stuff like that, so I'm not going to hunt it down for you... :innocent:
