Yeah, there're feral hogs here in Md TN, too. They don't last long once spotted. They get tracked and shot by local officials asap. There's a rogue bull around here someplace as I type this. Broke out of his pen the other night and has managed to evade capture for about 2 weeks now. Saw some of his droppings up on the Natchez Trace Parkway where I ride, frequently. Flagged down a Ranger and he told me he was aware of the bull and to be careful while riding the Trace. Last year I saw a wolverine on the Trace while riding at night. There're bobcats, panthers, coyotes, bears...all kinds of predators in this area, but they avoid humans, mostly. Deer, turkey, skunks, rabbits and my personal fav, the box turtle. Have helped about 100 of them get across the road and not become buzzard food.

Glad your unhurt, OP. That must've been a harrowing experience. Only funny in retrospect.

I was doing a survey one time--and I had to cross this giant field.
There was a big piece of machinery mowing away or something.
The driver went out of his way to come over and say in
broken English--watch out for de pigs--dey a lot of dem
in here.

So then I kept going through this chest high cover crop
and was kinda twitchy.

When I lived in S. texas, I often hunted the feral hogs there. Since they are not native, the game laws do not cover wild hogs.

I can give you one general truism about wild hogs: there are no rules, these critters can be unpredicatable. Sometimes they run away, some times they charge. Sometime they die easily, sometimes you wish you had an anti-tank gun.

But they are prolific breeders & cook up nicely. A fertile sow can have 3 litters a year with a dozen piglets per. The meat usually has just enough fat to cook easily.

Feral pigs are a rampant pest in Hawai'i, sometimes walking the streets in town, but my commuting route is a bit too developed to run into them. I always carry a heavy machete when I'm exploring in the wilderness, though. First piggie that tries to charge me is getting his snout cut off, but they consistently run or ignore me. Fortunately I haven't run into any feral bulls yet...that's a different kind of animal.

I live about 30 miles from the OP and the State Park near my house has lot's of wild hogs and a couple of other things that keep me pedaling pretty hard when I encounter them. A couple of times when I started riding I was getting tired and thinking about taking a break when I ran accross hogs, or bobcats or snakes and I haven't even seen the bears yet.
