Anyone else addicted to craigslist

I don't even need a bike, but I have to check the bikes section at least once a day to see if I can get a deal. Anyone else like this?

moxfyre 08-16-07 11:16 PM

Yes, horribly so. I've even written a few Python scripts to automatically extract bikes that might be interesting to me (picks out keywords like Miyata, steel, touring, 60 cm, etc.)

jschu 08-16-07 11:43 PM

Several times a day. And I'm in an area with a crappy used bike market, so there's never anything good. People talking about getting Treks for 50 bucks and it spurs me on.

stringbreaker 08-16-07 11:55 PM

Yes

rando 08-17-07 03:50 AM

me too!

xB_Nutt 08-17-07 04:21 AM

JUst checked it before I came here!!

knobster 08-17-07 06:37 AM

Wow, I thought I was alone in this. I do several times a day. I sell a few bikes on there also, but oddly enough not to anyone local.

Mr. Underbridge 08-17-07 06:57 AM

Definitely thought I was the weirdo there. ;)

Is it a sickness if I saw a bike identical to mine for sale, and thought 'hey, that would be useful to have for parts'?

mtbikerjohn 08-17-07 07:04 AM

I check out craigslist,too..My only problem are the replies I'm getting for a cross bike I'm selling..You know the type.."I'm out of the country right now,but I can send my representative to pick up and ship the bike..Meanwhile,I'm sending this Bank of Nigeria check, for ten times the asking price of your bike..." Arghh! what happened to buying locally?:D John

Yeah, I am kinda addicted. I got my 520 on CL back in June. I check the CL site for my area and 5 surrounding areas...

bfromcolo 08-17-07 08:13 AM

Me too. I have bought 2 bikes and sold 3 so far this year on Craigslist.

Flimflam 08-17-07 08:14 AM

Yep, bought a frame and chainring so far - I check it regularly, lots of high prices on bikes in this town, but there are some gems on there.

hairlessbill 08-17-07 08:36 AM

My name is Bill, and I am a craiglistaholic. I've bought more bikes than I've sold on craigslist. I've bought stuff just cuz it was too good a deal to pass up. It's a sickness. Though I know I'm not the only one around here because whenever there's a good deal it's gone before I can even pick up the phone.

Biggest ones that got away: an xtracycle kit brand new for $150.00. I contacted the seller as soon as I saw it and missed it by one email.

Bikes, jobs, even my old house.....

I love craigslist !!!

Ive been on it twice tday, already ! :D

JeffS 08-17-07 08:54 AM

I check CL frequently, but never expecting to see anything I'd want. Everything I've ever wanted to buy was gone by the time I got to it (meaning within a few hours). Besides, I don't like driving, which is why I don't really try to buy things there.

On the other hand, I'm an absolute ebay junkie. I currently get about 30 saved search emails a day. Additionally, I check road bikes in 60-61 and XL at least twice a day - "other" about every third day, and the mountain XL category about every other day.

I've never had much luck selling on craigslist. I've sold two bikes, but it was a huge hassle compared to putting it on ebay. I've become a frequent user of the free category though. In the past, I would throw stuff away. Now, everything goes on the free list, or if too small, gets boxed for the occasional trip to the thrift shop - with the ultimate goal being to stop buying stuff I'll ever need to sell.

I still check craigslist but I pretty much gave up on it. Too many owners with their heads up their @ssses. Lots of 15 year old bikes who's owners ask $400 or $50 Huffy going for $85.
Craigslist language translation:

vintage = rusty obsolete piece of crap.
Upgrade = broken parts replaced so I can sell the bike at a higher price.
Tri bike = any bike from Trek mountain to an old Schwinn road

porq 08-17-07 10:09 AM

I've got 6 bikes now with 3 of them from craigslist. I keep telling my wife that I'm buying them for parts or to re-sell them, but it's hard to part with the bikes once I have them.

Mendel 08-17-07 10:28 AM

Hello, my name is Mendel and I'm a Craigslist junkie.

I check the bike list for my county and 2 neighboring counties at least twice a day. My current bike is off of there ~$120 for a 2002 Fuji Finest (Sora) in nice condition.

Maybe people will heed this advice:

discosaurus 08-17-07 10:43 AM

I check it daily. It's impossible to find a good old bike in my size.

I just missed one. :(

dave.lloyd 08-17-07 11:47 AM

The pickings on the STL craigslist do seem to be pretty slim.

Of course, in South City, there's dumpster diving on bulk trash pick up week. We must live in the best spot ever for that. So far, our tally is a perfectly great Weber gas grill, a girl's barbie bike, a little tykes chair, a little tykes kitchen and what appears to be a 1977 Stingray Fair Lady.

Guess the people behind us have too much money to care. :)

robtown 08-17-07 11:56 AM

Hello,

My name is Robert and I'm a craigslist junkie. I do craigslist several times a day. I have bought bikes, frames, parts, shoes. I have sold bikes, wheels, pedals and other items to keep my habit fresh.

I am driven to depression for having missed a $!00 deal on a bent this week.

When I'm not checking craigslist I'm checking steapandcheap.com for low priced Continental tires, jerseys, bibs, or $15 Topeak saddle bags with full tool set (wrenches, patch kit, spoke wrench, chain breaker).

M_S 08-17-07 12:05 PM

Yeah.

And I missed a killer deal last week so I'm really bummed out.

Edit: On a side note, this posting is awesome.

The Craigslist listings in Little Rock are so thin that checking it monthly is almost enough to stay up to date. I do hang out in their bike forum though.
