I haven't read everyones' posts on this thread, so forgive me if someone already said it.

The chain and toothed sprocket are more than just components on bicycles in their traditional form. Those two components are intrinsic symbols of the bicycle identity. And stuff.

If you do away with the chain and toothed sprocket, what replaces them will have to be far superior and look just as cool or the bicycle community will be pissed. You will also have to rename every other bike shop in the world.
