This afternoon I saw the craziest dude on a bike I've ever seen. I'm driving home from work on yet another rainy Auckland afternoon. Its about half an hour before sunset and its getting dark, the roads are wet, its raining and its peak hour so theres heaps of cars on the road. I'm driving along one of the main roads on the way home. Its a 4 lane road, 2 each way. Although its a main road the lanes aren't that wide, so there'd be about 1 to 1.5m between the cars in each lane. Its not a very nice road to ride on because of the amount of traffic and narrow lanes. I'm in the inside lane, nearest the centre of the road and as I'm going down this hill I see in the rearvision mirror this dude on a bike. He's between the 2 lanes on my side of the road, so between my lane and the lane before the footpath. What amazed me was the speed he was going at. Traffic was going somewere between 30-40km/hr and this dude was passing cars. He just cranked passed me and disapeared up the middle of the traffic . Maybe I'm just a big wimp, but man is that a good way to get knocked off your bike or what?. It'd be bad enough in the middle of the day but peak hour in the rain. And in Auckland too, a city not at all cycle friendly.
