Test rides when there's nothing in stock?
I am prepping to buy a touring/commuting bike soonish. I live in a small town, near some other small towns, and the bike shops tend not to have any such thing on hand--they all would need to order a given model as a special order.
Any suggestions on how to avoid simply ordering a bike sight unseen? I guess I could take a trip to Eugene or PDX...I like any pretext for going to Portland.

Call and see If anyone has it in stock. Decide which town or city you would like to go to and make it a day or even a weekend event. Test ride it and if you like it you can wait until you get back to your town to buy it. If you feel awkward about just test riding a bike you could also pick up a couple of tubes or accessories at the shop after you test ride it. Buying a bike in your town is a great way to keep money in the community and build a good customer relationship with your LBS. Even if it costs a little more in your town it's well worth it. Have fun and be safe.
