Eggbeater cleats
Has anyone had trouble with the new eggbeater cleats which don't have those little wing things to either side of the bolt holes? I just got a new pair of cleats, and they were creaking and loose I had to put back on the old pair of cleats. The wings seem to be essential, otherwise, the pedal is directly contacting the shoe as the only pressure contact.
Anyone else wish for the old cleats back?

Hmm, interesting. I can't say, though, since I don't have the newer cleats on my shoes.
What kind of shoes? I have a pair of Specialized MTB style shoes...

Shoot, I'll have to watch out when I get new cleats, I guess.. 
I take it you're using the bare Eggbeaters, then? I mix mine up between Mallets and Quattros.

It turns out that pricepoint.com seems to have the old ones available. I just stocked up a bit in case crank bros doesn't redesign their cleats. I rode the "premium" cleats for two days and I just hate them. Well, no more.

Crankbros. makes a "road cleat" that takes the wings a little further. Might make the cleats work even better for you if you find the wings helpful. Dunno.
I actually prefer the rounded cleats without the wings. The wings prevent me from mounting the cleats on some mountain bike shoes without shaving the shoe.

I believe I have used both without any issues.
I may be wrong but I think the rounded ones are the generic cleats that fit most (if not all) CB pedals.

Do you find them digging into your shoe sole more? It just seems like bad design to me; having the pedal to shoe contact be only against the shoe sole. The creaking is probably because of the old wear line in the shoes. But besides that, the premium cleats don't feel as solidly connected as the old cleats.
Does Crank Bros plan to keep selling the regular cleat? On their website, they only show the premium. Perhaps they are trying to consolidate their designs seeing as the candies are probably more popular than the bare eggbeaters now.

Since I haven't used both on the same shoe I can't say how each of them performs. Did you install the rubber spacer under the cleat?

I didn't install the spacer because it raised the cleat over the tread of my shoe and made it hard to walk. My shoes have a groove in them from the pedals, that might be the source of my problems, but my issue is that with the regular cleat, the grooves are only as deep as the "wings" on the cleat are high. With the premium cleat, there is nothing but the relatively soft shoe tread to keep the grooves from going all the way through the sole of my shoe.

I have used both types of cleats with Sidi Bullets and plain eggbeaters...they look different, but I can't tell the difference when riding.
