Frogger
Lite rain, 9pm on a dark trail trail (DC's capital crescent). Headlight illuminates what appear to be leaves blown on the trail. Many are. Some, however, are frogs/toads? Its hard to tell the leaves from the frogs until you are nearly on top of them. Upon verifying an item's status as a fellow animal, I am able to swerve my front wheel out of the way. Unfortunately, the back wheel carves a tighter arc and sometimes squishes. It is truly a sickening sound and frankly enough to make me buy fenders. In six miles tonight I killed 4 toads through rear wheel squishing action and one that inexplicably jumped into the front spokes.
I've seen them before during/after a rain but never like this. Is there anything to be done here (mount headlight lower to get a better view)? The fenders are not really a solution as they treat effect not the cause.
