Nice. I like the semi-compact frame Salsa has going on here. It seems like a good compromise between the full compact, which I don't like the looks of as much, and the classic full sized frame. I suspect this one is potentially a wee bit stiffer than a standard frame and it certainly would give a litte more top tube clearance in the small sizes (a recurring problem for me).

Congratulations - sweet ride. Keep the rubber side down on you maiden voyage!

you sure you want to get this thing all dirty by riding it to work?

jk, looks like a very fun bike.

beingtxstate 09-13-07 05:54 PM

That's one spicy casserole!! Nice ride!

Schwinnrider 09-13-07 07:06 PM

Very nice, indeed. Are you going to mount fenders?

xB_Nutt 09-13-07 07:27 PM

Thanks for the props guys. I am very pleased with how it turn out.

I have a set of Honjo hammered silver fenders that I am considering putting on. I'll probably just ride it on nice days for a while though...

That's a beauty. I'm a little afraid to ask, but will anyways: how much did that bad-boy set you back?

marqueemoon 09-13-07 07:39 PM

Wow. Incredible.

Lovely Salsa

Lovely bike! 2 quick questions:

tire size?

Your opinion on bar end shifters. I'm starting to build up a new commuter and considering either re-using some Ultegra brifters I have (need to replace the left shifter, which is busted) or going with bar ends. No experience with them myself.

Thanks!

Thanks. The build would have been close to $2K, but I had a lot of the parts that I robbed from other bikes. I had to sell my Karate Monkey and if I ever can sell the Witcomb frame and wheels, I will break even.

Tires are 700 x 28c. Salsa says you can fit 700 x 35c alone or 700x32c with fenders.

I personally prefer bar end shifters to "brifters", but I tend to be a little old school. I think it is easier to shift from the drops with bar end shifters and you can fine tune the front dérailleur much easier with the left friction shifter with the triple chainring up front. I contemplated going with integrated brake lever/shifters for this build, but cost and the front triple made me decide to use the bar end shifters.

This is probably OT, but I don't think you're just old-school. I've only been riding for a year (hence, not old school) but I'm seriously contemplating dumping the brifter for the FD in favor of a friction bar-end. Getting the tuning just right on it so it goes easily into all 3 rings *and* doesn't cross-chain except in the 2 most extreme combinations is pretty much impossible (on my frame, at least). So if I'm always trimming the damned thing anyway, and since indexing really doesn't add anything for switching between 3 gears...why the hell do I want a brifter for the front again?

Wood fenders look so much better for this setup.

That is so cool. If I hadn't bought a new frame last winter for my commuter, I would be ordering a Casseroll. Might just get one anyway, and turn my commuter into a single speed. My commuter frame (De Bernardi) fits me perfect and is sweet riding, but has racing geometry with no eyelets for fenders or racks.

Great looking Casseroll. Do you happen to know your saddle height (from center of BB to top of saddle)? I am considering one of these frames and I'm having a hard time deciding between the 55 and 57. With the 55 the bars may be too low and with the 57 they may be too far away for me.

Again..looks great.

80cm from center of bb to top of saddle. I would size based on top tube length.

Gibbygoo 09-23-07 08:49 PM

looks delicious!

M_S 09-23-07 08:57 PM

If it were me, I would have used a silver stem, spacers and seatpost. Looks sweet nevertheless. :D

If I were buying new, I'd tend to agree.

Nice bike, though I still wish Salsa had put a brighter color on it. The color was half the reason I bought my Las Cruces.

M_S 09-23-07 09:33 PM

I do like the subtle matching though: red tape to red skewers, aero hoods to brooks.

Oh, and the silver fenders would look good on it even if you only ride fair weather.

Hi--this is a lovely bike!

I am in the process of building up a casseroll myself and have run into a hitch. I am installing brifters, but just realized that there aren't any derailluer bosses on the downtube--there are just the bosses for downtube shifters. I notice on your build that you seem to have an attachment that slips over the downtube shifter bosses, however. Where can I get these, and what are they called?

Thanks so much for your help.

jpdesjar 05-12-08 05:27 PM

Nice bike
For a second I thought someone was going to post a recipe for a casserole, what a tease.
I should go eat dinner now

They came with the bar end shifters.

I'm pretty sure you can buy them separately, like here: http://www.loosescrews.com/index.cgi...id=23183910662

Your shifters should have come with downtube cable stops. Both Shimano and Campy make them. They fit over the downtube shifter bosses and serve as cable guides when you use brifters. Here's a link to the Shimano ones:
