Nexus Hub Shifting

Thinking about building an internally geared bike for winter use, but I'm hung up on the shifting.

If I use a Nexus Hub on a cyclocross bike, can I use any standard Shimano 8 speed shifter? STI? Bar con? Down tube?

Cyclist0383 10-08-07 11:31 PM

No. You need a Nexus specific shifter.

This is the one pitfall of hub gears, you are extremely limited in shifter options.

Even a friction shifter won't work?

Barabaika 10-09-07 09:58 AM

You need a HubBub bar-end shifter mount ($50) in order to install a Nexus shifter if you want drop bars.

You can get it to work, but if it's not DEAD-ON in the right spot, you'll mis-shift and/or tear up the gearing. Get a shifter made for the nexus. Sorry.

This is true, and you can make your own by using set screws and a few different sizes of metal pipe if you're into mac-gyvering things together. I have a friend who put SRAM Twist-grips on his drop barends by doing this. Let's just say we don't call him "Crowbar" for no reason.

Yeah, that's one of the only things keeping me from converting another bike to internal, especially after seeing the "San Jos8" from Harris. One of the nice things about the internal is the very slick, no extraneous parts hanging off the bike look that you get, and then there's the shifter :(

You could use these dropbars and the shifter would be up on the flats.

interesting handlebars, too bad I prefer ergo style drops.

My attemps to translate german to english is not to good. Maybe some fluent german speakers can translate for us. I was told that the maker of this rohloff shifter that fits on standard road bars makes one for nexus hubs. I'm not trying to start any rumors just relaying what I heard. Here is a link with picture of the rohloff. Scroll down.

If anybody can find out if they make nexus shifters please report back.

At the current rate those are $202!

I'd just drop $20 for a REI Safari trekking bar and use regular brake levers.

If we in the states could get our hands on an Alfine trigger shifter, would that work with the Nexus?

I know people in USA who have them, and they say they're awesome.

carlton 10-10-07 07:36 PM

We should all pool our money and get Sheldon Brown to make us a nexus shifter that works on dropbars. :)

mriley 10-10-07 09:11 PM

the HubBub bar end shifter does work with Nexus. That's the whole point of it.

Well it shifts, but it's ugly. I don't know if that's "working".

The Alfine group is available in Canada, and it must be the same for the USA.

Barabaika 10-11-07 02:17 AM

It's better to call and ask SRAM to make a carbon shifter for the drop bars.
SRAM already has a lighter carbon variant of their i-Motion 9-speed internal hub:

^^^

Is it actually for sale though?

Available or not, I'm just wondering if the Alfine shifter would work with the Nexus Hub. I would imagine it will because from what I've read the internals of the two hubs are identical.

Plus shipping across the pond. Ad you've still got to deal with how to actually mount it, getting the shifter worked around the bend an up onto the flat would be a *****.

I've used the hub-bub. Admittedly it ain't cheap, but I thought it was quite a neat solution.

That is EXACTLY what has kept me from converting to an internal hub. The shifter is great for the flat bar users out there...but I use and love drop bars. And I don't like the PVI with drop bars.

Yes it works. I know people, as I said before, who have done this and love the setup.

I bought an alfine trigger shifter to use with my Nexus inter8, and it works beautifully. I could not imagine using anything else with the Nexus hub. If you read the mtbr forums, you will notice that there are a number of people who believe it performs much better than the revo twist shifter. Supposedly the Alfine trigger shifter allows the nexus to be used in off road situations with great results, but if you use the revo twist shifter off road it will cause serious problem that might destroy the hub. The Alfine rapidfire tap shifter is basically made for the nexus since the nexus and the alfine hub are mechanically identical (except the Alfine can use disc brakes and utilize a chain tensioner).
