I agree that people get shot for your kind of conduct.

Rise above the big pile of stupid people. Keep safe.

You do know throwing eggs out of a car with the intention of hitting people is assault, right?

There was a sad case here in Toronto with stupid kids in a car throwing eggs at people. One little girl got hit in the eye and she lost her eye! Those guys in the car throwing eggs will do it to almost any target that they can find. Props to the OP, he showed them that not everyone you mess with are idle targets.
I would have also tried to get the plate number and call into the police. Those kinds of punks need to go to jail for once to learn that their actions can cause way more than what they intended.

Sorry, what you did was wrong. All you did was upset some stupid pranksters and made yourself feel better...for awhile. You didn't solve anything and made teenagers and bicyclists look like jerks. You not only upset the dudes in the car, a whole bunch of other people saw you and didn't know why you did it, not to mention the folks on the sidewalks. You accomplished nothing positive.

(come on, you know it had to be said :) )

Jesus may have been a softie...but God's a vengeful f**ker. He'd have struck them dead on the spot with a bolt of lightning from a cloudless sky. Or perhaps spontaneous human combustion.

Ah... I only wish this would happen a bit more often. Personally, I've only seen something similar happen once.

Artkansas 11-01-07 10:32 AM

You're young, so I understand your reaction. But I hope you weren't hoping for praise from us.

What you did was stupid, dangerous and foolhardy. I too have been the target of car-launched missiles. But you mananged to not only lower yourself to their level and then got even lower.

As another poster said, you were lucky that they weren't armed. And, had they just stopped, I'm sure you would have taken the bait and confronted them, only to get the snot beaten out of you.

I'm glad you are all right except for the egg stains on your uniform. However, keying their car and smashing the mirror after the fact could only be seen by a judge as vandalism. So had the fellows in the car had your name and address, they would successfully sue you for a paint job and mirror repair.

And since you ride that route frequently, you now have to deal with the fact that the next time they see you on the street, they could get rough.

I've never had a repeat incident with someone that I had a physical confrontation with. I've had multiple repeat incidents from people who repeatedly buzz me or swerve at me from another lane.

Yeah right  A bunch of teenagers throwing projectiles at a cyclist is really going to want to go in front of a judge.

My guess is the driver will tell his parents the car was vandalized when parked.

I've been considering something slightly different, but thanks for the idea. It's a good one for anyone spending any time in heavy traffic. Just yesterday I had someone make 1/2 a right turn and stop. Blocking my path as well as a line of cars behind her :(

But if the parents had the OPs info, its quite likely that the parents would go for the court action.

I don't think the kid would tell his parents. If he did, I don't think the parents would want their kid charged with assault and battery.

You're lucky they did not stop and fill you full of lead.

I think the OP is lucky not to have been hurt but I am not sorry the car was damaged. The may have only been eggs but a car is just a car.

as for turning every other cyclist into a target, I think it did just the opposite, now they know not to throw stuff at cyclists in traffic because if they have the balls or adrenaline or something, they can catch up.

Also I wouldn't have gone after them the second time if they weren't still throwing eggs at me. When one came extremely close I pulled off the sidewalk and went after them again, then I kicked the mirror off.

"Let me guess. 5th grade?

Nice one, Guido."
No 10th grade.

"Good job, I'm glad you stood up for your self. I bet they will think twice before messing with a cyclist again! And I think MrC said it best, your are in school and sound like a smart kid (heck I would of been scared to be seen on a bike at 15 ) Of course thats about the only way I get around now.

On a related story. A few years before I was born, someone pulled up beside my dad while he was on his motorcycle and they were in a truck. They tried to hit him with a lugnut wrench or whatever they are called, while driving down the highway! He pulled off his helmet and smashed the guy face in with the helmet and somehow it ripped the guys eyebrow off.

I'm sure someone will criticize him for that, but I might not even be here now if he hadent done that."

Exactly

Jesus is also said to have gotten angry at a bunch of money changers in a temple and gone on something of a tirade causing some property damage.

Well, I guess there is a possibility that Jesus would of smashed their car too :)

I can't find myself siding with or respecting any of the parties to this story. They don't get any respect because they're clearly a bunch of little derelicts. Targeting cyclists like that isn't cool. On the other hand, you lost all modicum of respect by retaliating like that. Cars have neat things called license plates, and a call to the police is much better than assaulting people. It sounds to me like in your retaliation, you acted unsafely, travelling at high speeds, cutting through traffic, generally disobeying road laws, and then worse, endangering pedestrians by hopping up onto the sidewalk while making a getaway.

I know we're out there under dangerous conditions cycling, and I know there are a lot of pricks who don't like it or who don't treat us with respect, but really, this kind of behavior is unacceptable in my head. Please don't continue this behavior, someone could get hurt.

God now I sound like some kind of mother. :(

Iget the point of what you're saying but we aren't homeless. We aren't old ragged forgoten objects either. And yes it was dangerous for me to scare the pedestrians like that but in the heat of the moment everyone does dumb stuff:o

:roflmao:

Yes, ask around. I'm sure you'll hear all kinds of stories about how helpful the police are in most cyclist-involved situations.

I can tell you exactly how many times a report that I've called in has done any good.... 0. ;)

Thank you for playing, and better luck next time.

The OP didn't assault anyone, he assaulted a car. Funny you should mention mothers though. My mother used to vandalize cars when they illegally parked in front of our garage blocking her in.

I don't know about Chicago - I know where I've lived, the cops tend to respond to assault calls. It doesn't matter what mode of conveyance the victim was using, throwing eggs from a car is assault. I guess the other part of it is that I know cops, so I don't know what it would be like for someone who doesn't have cops in their social circle or something. Still, if you don't report it, you don't know how they'll respond.

Doesn't really matter anyhow, not sure how much I believe the story in the first place.

Assault is, generally, any attempt to commit a battery.

I guess I was the perfect target though. I guess they saw me and said, "Hey, look at this guy, 15 year old preppy black guy on a bicycle wearing a helmet in school uniform (I go to a catholic school)."

So (for those of you who know Chicago) I left school 35th & Michigan Ave. I was riding south on King Drive. Less than a mile from home I crossed 73rd street. I was doing a steady 16mph on the far right side of the road. Then I felt something hit my bookbag and splatter on my pants and stuff. Man I'm glad I didn't use my panniers today. Then a little red Toyota Corolla with some rap song drove by with three older boys laughing. I was furious!

So there is a stoplight at 75th street. I was determined to get back at them. So I sped after them at nearly 30 mph. They were looking out for me and I stopped about twenty feet behind them and waited for the light to turn green. They were in the middle lane, a car was waiting to turn left in the far left lane, and a CTA bus was picking up passengers on the far right. The light turned green, I shot foward, keys in hand. I passed them leaving a nice long scratch from fender to fender of the little red corolla.

"OH Hell Naw!" I heard one of them yell. Now that scared the **** out of me. Fearful of being run down or something I cut in front of the bus and rode over a curband onto a crowded sidewalk. I was now riding down the sidewalk and they rode alongside me throwing eggs. One almost hit me. Still mad I missed my turn and pursued them to the next stoplight. I rode behind them at about twenty mph. The light turned green just as I caught up with them I stuck my footout and kicked their mirror. The mirror was rigid and made of fiberglass. It cracked and was hanging. I hightailed it home feeling very pleased with myself.:)

Ultimate Revenge! Yay!

Do they discuss "turning the other cheek" at your school?
