Converting into a Commuter
Hey,
I am turning a Trek XO1 cyclocross into a flat bar commuter. I have the brakes and everything picked out, I am just wondering if anyone has any recomendations on what bars to put on it? |
Flat ones?
|
I would keep the drops
|
what's the point of straight bars on a commuter? just limits your hand positions. i'd put a moustache on her, or leave it alone depending on where you're commuting. i'd think city/urban rides you'd want to be more upright, longer country commutes you can be down on drops... i also like any kind of bars up relatively saddle height high...
|
Pretty much any flat bar will do. Any alloy mtn bike bar worth $20-40 will work great. If you want bling, get a carbon fibre bar.
|
I wanna put flat ones on yeah. I want to be more upright, I dont have a huge commute, I just want something a little different, I have an old schwinn turned into a fixie with bullhorn bars and a roadie so I want a commuter with the flat bar.

how about a moustache ?
don't think you would need to change shifters or brake levers, but you might need a slightly different stem. |
im tempted to say drops, havig used both i find the drops much better even in traffic
|
I would keep the drops, but raise the stem some. It will give you that upright position, as well as many different hand positions for comfort. My flat-bars don't have as many places to...grab onto when I need to react/jerk the bike around. It is all just personal preference.

But, you see, that's what you would do, the OP wants to use flats so that's why he asked.
Some like drops, some flats... and some like bars that are so narrow you may as well be steering with the stem. |
You can try Nitto North Road. It puts your hands in a very natural position, and you'll be more upright.
http://aebike.com/page.cfm?action=li...Id=1355&type=T It can have different widths. I think that 54-56cm ones are better, they feel like 44-46cm drop bars. The only problem is with some trigger shifters. http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/images/...ky_corkpit.jpg |
