Leather dress cycling shoes (SPD)?
Cycling has to have the ugliest accessories of any sport. I'd like to wear a hip pair of leather dress shoes to work that are SPD compatible for my 13-mi. commute. Does such a thing exist?

Probably not. There are some pretty nice looking "casual" shoes to be had though.

Leave a hip pair of leather dress shoes under your desk. Problem solved.

Maybe these Bruno Magli shoes will work

I vote for leaving the shoes at work.
I wouldn't want to subject my feet to sweaty shoes all day if I didn't have to. |
Hey, if she can ride in these, then anything is possible.

1+ on leaving your good shoes at work. They are likely to get scuffed up on the bike anyway.

I've been thinking for a while of using a Dremel to carve out a space for an SPD cleat and plate in a pair of street shoes.

If you have $800, this guy might make you a pair.

That's what I do. They are not too heavy to carry along with you either, if wearing the same shoes more than once a week is not an option.

What's the issue with just carrying the shoes you want to wear with you? In my case, I'm carrying a full set of clothes to change into, so shoes and a belt are just part of that (also a towel and washcloth to use when I shower).
|
Leave them at work.

I'll betcha Riccardo Ricco wears Bruno Magli's when he's spinning through the countryside burning off some form of EPO.
+1 on leaving a dress pair at work... |
huh?
Just ride in your shoe of choice with a platform pedal. That is what the Dutch do. This obsession with being attached to the pedals is somewhat misguided IMO. Cut the cord and experience freedom baby, yeaaahh!:50::bang:

Years ago you could get a cobbler to install cleats into your leather-soled shoes for longer touring rides. I don't know if it's still done nowadays. It may not be a good idea to cycle in fancy dress shoes without taking proper care with good polishing, using cedar shoe trees to absorb moisture and never wearing the same pair of shoes two days in a row. Those are the basics for just wearing them, but for cycling in them I'm clueless....
