My Kryptonite Cable Lock Won't Open!

I locked it indoors, thankfully, but still I cannot open it using the combination I know like the back of my hand. I sprayed some WD-40 to no avail. What do I do short of getting some cable cutters?

you can try blunt force trauma, a.k.a. a hammer.

Sometimes, a quick jolt to the lock will loosen up ice, rust, or dirt that's keeping it from operating smoothly.

does it have a changeable combo? If so you may have accidentally changed the combo while locking it up. (usually theres some sort of ring you have to twist to change the combo) If you did that, you most likely just changed the last digit. Try all of the digits on the last combo ring and see if that helps.

If it doesn't, grasp each end of the cable on either side of the lock, and pull. While holding the tension , rotate the combo rings one at a time until you feel them click, keep doing that for each one. Sometimes you can "pick" them that way. Kryptonites are nicer, and Ive only done it on my gf's cheapo combo lock. YMMV.

Cable Cutter

Listen, Kryptonite locks have been known to reset themselves. Try using the default combo: 0-0-0-5.

Thanks for the suggestions. Finally I found a use for my Park Tools cable cutter! I will never use these types of locks again. If I had had this problem on the street (which I do to secure the front tire) I'd really be pissed.

This is the second time I have heard of this happening with Kryptonite combo lock. You need to call the c/s since they will pay you for the lock.

BTW, how long did it take you to cut the cable?

Thanks for the reminder I will contact the company.

Well I started off with a hacksaw ... that was going to take awhile until I remembered I had the brake cable cutters. I thought they were too small for the job but a couple of snips did the trick ...I'd say about a minute or less.

I had the same problem with a kryponite cable. The numbers would spin, but they were obviously no longer connected to the innards. Mine took way less than 5 minutes to hacksaw free. The hassle was that I had to walk home to get the hacksaw.
