Face mask
Hi guys,
Just started commuting by bike to class this year. The weather this past few days has been reasonably chilly. I've noticed a problem with breathing in all that cold air, as I'm sure most of you have experienced. Do you guys have any recommendations for a type of mask (the kind that just covers your mouth/nose) that works well in 20/30 degree weather?
Thanks,
Ryan

I recommend a gnarly beard. I start growing mine out in late August for ski season, but it does a body good during a cold morning commute.

I've been using a cover that has a built in plastic vent that helps prewarm the air.
Works very well, and is non restrictive. I've used it down to -12 F.
I discovered it awhile ago here on BF...in one of the older threads. It's called Psolar EX.

I couldn't find the one I got last year from performance on their site, but it was just a mask for your face that velcroed in the back (nothing for head/ears). I really like this because when I start heating up on the bike 20 min into the ride I can just take it off and put it in my pocket. Otherwise, it'd be too hot for the entire commute.

My face, hands, and feet are the first things that get cold. Core is always warm. Sometimes I really think the ideal winter clothes are face mask, mittens, moon boots, and shorts and t-shirt.
That said, I've tried a zillion masks from snowboarding over the years. The best combo I've found so far are the Under Armor Cold Gear Hood, and the Seirus Combo Clava. On super cold days I wear both. But my face gets cld really easy, and I am prolly the first to rock a mask in the fall, and the last ditch one in the spring. On warmer days you can mix and match them on the conditions (they are a little different in thicknesses).
And if you feel like being punk, you can rock one these. Actually quite warm.

FWIW, I have a PSolarX balaclava with the heat exchanger, and I never used the exchanger more than 3 or 4 days. It restricts my airflow to where in a couple of minutes I'm gasping for breath and have to rip it out from in front of my mouth anyway.
I suppose if I had a sensitive throat and couldn't stand breathing below-zero air, I'd have to use it, but as it is I clench my teeth, put my tongue against the back of the teeth, and breathe in through my mouth so the air has to go around my tongue and cheeks; that warms it up enough for me.

Erf. I actually had to break mine out tonight. Got down to 34. Yeah, that's not all that cold, but my face/ears freeze really quick, esp w/wind. I didn't think winter was that close!
