Bike valet

How about this idea: In order to promote cycling we eliminate a huge problem with it. Malls and other high traffic areas would have a dedicated bike parking area with an attendant at a counter at the entrance. You take a ticket when you enter, that way no one without a ticket can enter and steal bikes/parts. Could completely eliminate locks with more attendants being able to monitor the bike lot. The lot would also be covered and close to mall entrance. People might actually want to bike for the novelty/convenience of this.

Just an idea, what do you think?

I think it'd be easier to just tax gasoline more and use that money to make more bike lanes.

I don't know if it would work at a mall. But that valet concept has been used at some farmers' markets and street fairs and were fairly successful.

This is exactly what happens at my local supermarket here in Tokyo.

I've never used it, but Newport on the Levee ( a shopping area, movie theatre, bars, eating, aquarium) has bike valet parking.

They also use it at Chicago Cubs games, too.

In San Francisco, all public events are required to have monitored bike parking to accommodate at least 1% the expected attendees. http://www.sfmta.com/cms/vclos/13487.html

The SF Bike Coalition does valet bike parking at a lot of big outdoor events and at all SF Giants games. http://www.sfbike.org/?valet

No valet, but I'll be riding to the store to avoid the mass confusion in the parking lots, lack of spots, and general stupidity. Although, I have the "large/bulky" gifts bought already.
