What's your commute distance?

Looking at a new place to move to, and cant' decide if its too far or not.
Wondering what everyones normal commute distance is.

I live 4 miles from the office, but Monday-Thursday I have a 20-25 mile training ride before work. I guess if I lived 17 miles from work, it'd pretty much work out the same.

Got three different commutes, based on what's up at work (and where).
1.2 miles - usually walk
4.9 miles - often take the scenic route home or ride at lunch
17 miles - my favorite one. The ride home seems to turn into a time trial.

Oh, and distances are one way.

I think 45-60 minutes each way is an excellent commute. It's similar to the amount of time most people spend traveling to work, whatever their means of transport.

Mine is currently a 26km round trip. My last job's commute required a 48km round trip. I now get up at 4am and do extra riding a couple of times/week to make up for those lost kilometres.

Mine is 18.5 miles each way, just about perfect in the spring, summer and fall but it can be a character builder in the winter.

Mine is 15.5 miles each way. It takes just under 2hrs round
trip. Once winter really hits I don't think I will be able to do
the commute.

I'm about 9.3 miles if I take the mountain bike trails or about 10.2 miles if I take the roads so it's about a 19 mile round trip for me, mostly flat except for the small hill I live on. Takes about 35-50 minutes depending if I'm on the road or on the trail. I commute on a mountain bike with semislicks because of the trail aspect.

I have a 10 mile one way commute which is a mile longer if I take the alternate route that has less traffic. I spend about 45 min. to an hour depending on which bike I use-3 speed or 10 speed. I am thinking of getting a mountain bike for the winter which may up the run time a little. I find 10 miles just the right distance for a good workout in the morning and a nice wind down in the evening. Even though I walk 2.5 miles during my lunch break,I still have enough energy for mowing the lawn and walking the dog at night.

Hi there,

My commute is about 40 km each. More than 3 days in a row is pushing it for me.

My commute is only 3.5 miles one way, but on the return trip I do a loop route which increases the overall round trip to ten miles (plus I do a moderately fast paced ride of about 45 minutes during lunch three days a week). So my normal commute regimen is ten miles for the round trip. My guess is I'd still commute every day if my distance increased to as much as 10 miles one way, but past that I'd probably begin riding my bike to the train station, and taking the train in.

My round trip distance is 10 miles(16 km). Some sections of the route are not plowed in the winter, so I use a slightly longer, 11-12 mile round trip when there is a lot of snow around.

At some distance beyond what I am now doing, it would be necessary to change clothing and shower. That would make driving more convenient than riding, although I might keep riding just for the health benefits. I suspect that:

>3 mile one way -- excessive wear on car as it never warms up, slower than bike, crazy to even cionsider driving unless heavy loads, multiple destinations.

3-6 mile one way-- bike may be slower than driving except in bad weather, but money savings, excercise benefits, personal satisfaction compensate for this.

4 - 36 miles. The former using a train for some of the route the latter taking rather circuitous routes. Generally 12-13 miles each way.

depending on which route I take home either 17.5 miles on 20 miles round trip

the route in is always 10 miles but usually in the evenings I'm trying to get home as quickly as possible so I take a slightly more direct route

roundtrip abt 4miles
yeah, yeah I know that is very short, but I bike it everyday to and from work and it not only saves me on gas, also a parking decal (almost $100 for a year)
so after work I go home and change and get on my road bike b/c the ride home is a great warm-up ride, then I am off for my real ride

My commute is 12.4 miles each way... I think that anything under 1 hour is a terrific commute year round. It makes me happy that I'm exercising about 1.5 hours a day without chewing up any time. And being outside instead of riding in a little metal box makes working in an office bareable.

20 miles one way, I usually hitch a ride home but as winter approaches may do both ways on some days.

20 miles each way during summer months; 13 miles each way during winter months. In fall and spring I'll mix-and-match. 1h15m for the 20-miler and about 40m for the 13-miler.

City streets mostly, 'burbs and light industrial otherwise.
