I got a $50 merino wool jersey too. There is a Royal Robbins outlet in my parents hometown in Northern California (Modesto) that had some wool jerseys. I bought one intending to use it as a base layer. My wife liked the way it looked on me so much that she bought two more for me in different colors. According to my wife I'm lacking in the casual clothing department with nothing in between work clothes and gardening clothes. I've used it once on a long bike ride and it worked great. Also I've worn another one 3 days in a row casually and it still has no odor and for something so thin feels very warm.

Same here but my wife claims the underarmour stuff amplifies the sweat smell. I'd skip the under layer but I am almost allergic to wool - even the really soft merino tops from Patagonia, Arcteryx, Icebreaker, etc. I love using the underarmour stuff because it fits skintight making it easy to layer. It'd be nice to try a silk undershirt with similar cut and fit though.

I use underarmor, something with a light knit (if extra cold) with a showers pass rain jacket as the outer layer with the vents open.

Nice and toasty
I agree with this one, I have 3 under armour type shirts(walmart ($12)and sports authority brand($20)) they are great just make sure you get the cold weather ones they are about twice as thick as the others, the others are real nice to but put a t-shirt on over it.

Thanks! I just bought a Nike LS jersey (the same one the pic posted) on ebay for $62 shipped. I'm just getting into commuting and have been wearing a walmart brand ls cold armor tight shirt under a poly thermal ls shirt with a light weight Hind windbreaker on top. Have wanted a heavier mid layer so this is great. Do you folks wear this wool jersey against your skin or with some type of poly or other undershirt? I have quite a few light weight short sleeve loose fitting poly shirts.

I'm in Akron, OH so temps are low 30's right now. I'm still working out what I need to wear for what temps. I had been a runner till a bum ankle and hip got me to move to biking, the clothing layers per temp are pretty different.

How about pants? Are should that be a new thread? Gotta say I'm not a tights kinda person. I've seen some sorta loose tights at my local PB (just opened a store 5min away). These have a windproof front panel and stretchy rear? Anyone have an opinion on these or other legwear?

Thank a lot.

UnderArmour coldgear chase 1/4 zip. HellyHansen fleece vest for mid-layer or UnderArmour Derecho fleece jacket (this is an outer layer but worn over the base layer on a cold day.) The Derecho jacket is windproof and waterproof.

I'll second the under armor recommendation. I have the cold gear mock turtleneck that works great as a base layer.

I can't stand underarmor. Wore it once and never again. Once I started perspiring I thought it was awful.

By the way, lightisright; $62 shipped? I didn't see anything like that! I ended up $72 shipped! Aargh!

Actually $62.99 (54.99 + 8 shp). From Bicycle_Outlet on ebay. I just got a UPS tracking number a few minutes ago!

Too bad for me though, I'm on a plane to International Falls, MN tomorrow morning. It's -15f there right now! That wool could have come in handy.
