Got a free reflective vest!

Last Thurs on the way home I had some guy flag me down rom the side of the road. He then handed me a brand new, in the package yellow reflective safety vest that had 3M scotchlite reflective material. Said he wanted me to be safe out there because he noticed by less than impressive orange mesh 'reflective' vest I got from my LBS. I guess he leads a road crew of some sort cause he gives them out to his guys (maybe Surveyors or something like that).

Funny thing was that I left 15 mins later than usual and I was going to be buying a new one this past weekend anyway!

So thanks to whoever that guy was!

That's pretty cool. Reminds me of a morning when I went outside as the garbage truck arrived. The guy on the truck admired my safety yellow jacket and asked where I got it. I guess NJ doesn't supply them to sanitation workers. Weird.

I have a couple of good day and night safety vests dropped by local construction companies. Thanks Ghilotti and NorthBay. They have been retired to my jobsite for when I have to work in high hazard zones. I have upgraded to a Class 3 safety "vest" for night riding. The new one has short sleeves so it counts as a shirt (no shirt, no service eh?) in hot weather, has several pockets including a special one for a cell phone, and an order more of reflective fabric. If you have $30 or so to spare try one.

It's unreal - these guys on the trucks leap around in the middle of the road at night wearing jeans/black clothing. When you go to Europe, pretty much everyone whose job involves standing on the street, on a construction site or near mobile machinery wears hi-viz.

Cool. See my thread here:
https://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=378850
regarding a vest with the greyish 3M (or 3M type) stuff, versus the plasticy reflective stuff. No comparison.
The good vests are cheap too.

I keep a hand full of the basic lime green vests with orange and silver reflective stripes in my truck and a couple of spares in my saddle bag. I hand them out to the "utility" cyclists I see along the roads. I got a whole case of them from the company we buy our safety gear from at a deep discount. I figure if it keeps just one person from getting hit is was worth the money. I still see a couple of the guys I gave them to last year, still wearing them and still riding in the same general area.
