Is this frame ok to build for commuting

Hello All

Saw this 2005 Schwinn, Super Sports frame, on E-bay.
It has a hole, in the seat stay, can't figure out what
went in the hole, unless it;s a screw attachment
for a rear rack. What you think, this frame. worth
fixing, the price now is 39.00.
It comes with:
Alex Aheadset
Alloy Stem
Alloy Flatbar
Seat Clamp
R/D Hanger
Truivative Isoflow Crank
28/38/48.
Has 3 days bidding to go.

I dunno...sounds like somebody stripped th bike after they decided they didn't want to deal with it. I'd probably pass. I think it's fair to say the bike's former owner was a moron.

Is that hole all the way through, incidentally? That might affect things a little. I wouldn't even consider it if it's all the way through.

looks like someone drilled it and chamfered it. Doesn't look safe. I would only buy it for the parts, and that's if I could pick it up.

I would not buy it. That hole looks like a braze on for a rack mount has been removed. Without the support of the braze on you have a hole in the seat stay of what I believe is an aluminum frame. Aluminum can crack around a hole like that (steel can too please don't start a steel vs. Aluminum debate:p) and there is a fair amount of stress on the seat stay when riding. Get another frame (steel aluminum, carbon, bamboo etc.) that does not have unsupported holes in it.

It's a speed hole. Makes the bike go faster.

It looks like someone went for a ride on the south or west sides of Chicago and took some serious gang fire.

I concur with those suggesting that this would not be a good buy. Why take a chance on a frame that might be unsound? Something else will come along.

Well, there was some kind of hole there to start with on these bikes, put there for a rack mount.

I can't imagine that someone drilled the frame. My guess is that there was some kind of insert that has been removed. I doubt I'd worry about it from a structural standpoint.

I wouldn't pay more than $100-150 for the complete bike (unless it was the disc brake version), so the frame so I'd value what you have there about where the bidding sits. The shipping cost would have a lot to do with the decision.

Then again, something about the deal may make it more attractive to you than me.

That hole is not caused by Chicago neighborhood celebrations. After careful photogammetric analysis it is determined that the aperture is exactly the same diameter of Captain Ahab's whaling harpoon. The bike was once painted white and ridden into to the peripheral vision of said whaling ship commander. Thus, triggering a synaptic eruption and hurling of harpoon.

This is proof of Meville's deleted passages referring to "shooting the moon with one arm tied behind me back". ARRGG!

It's a rack mount that has sheared off. It's an educated guess that the impact and/or load that caused it to shear also affected other areas of the frame. The hole makes a neat stress riser.

So, are the parts worth it?

If you need the crankset, bar, and stem, then go for it as long as the price doesn't go too high. But the only thing I'd use the frame for is a polo bike.

Pass.

I would never trust someone who photographs a bicycle in their kitchen. It's just so unsanitary. Seriously, you don't know where that kitchen has been.
