Youtube your ride
I love surfing Youtube for bike vids, so I was pretty happy when my darling wife gave me an Oregon ATC2000 (Picture Here) bike cam for Christmas.
Now, I havent been able to come up with anything like some of the MTB stuff I've seen on Youtube, and there is no way I am going to filter traffic like the Messenger guys ... but, its been raining cats and dogs here in Sydney lately and so I was pretty keen to get out in the wet and have a bit of a thrash on my old (circa 1986 non-suspension) MTB on some of the (flooded) local tracks.
Anyway, even though there is a Commuter Bicycle Pictures thread, there doesnt seem to be a Post your commute/favourite ride anywhere on here ... so ... now there is.
To kick us off ... here is mine ...

Awesome! I was 'locked in' for the whole ride. The camera was a little out of focus, sometimes, but who cares! The music was perfect and it felt very subversive. Thanks for sharing it. Makes me want to do a video of my commute when the factory where I work ramps back up. Nice job!

yeah that was good though I agree with the focus factor, looks like a lot of fun for sure. Keep it up look forward to seeing more videos from you and hopefully the others that make bikeforums like a second home or a place to just relax.

Yeah, us Aussies are mad for ABBA! I was planning on using Dancing Queen as backing, but then realised there was no way my humble Video was good enough to have anything written by Benny and Bjorn as its sound track!
Sorry about the focus issues - its not actually out of focus (the camera is pretty good with that), theres just all this water and crap splashed up on the camera lens (the Youtube compression algorithm doesnt help either). I guess videoing a really wet track wasn't such a hot idea after all ... I'll try again next weekend if the track is dry.
The Oregon Cam came with a ton of little adapters to mount the bike - velcro strap, rubber strap, and a little screw on device. I mounted mine low on the front fork, as close to the axle as possible. My feeling is the closer to the axle, the less the vibration - kind of like being in the centre of a see-saw ... its still moving but it isnt as noticable as it is on the end of the see-saw ... anyway, that's the theory.
That said, the main reason I like it there (besides being out of the way) is being low gives the video this cool skimming close to the ground feel - like you are really tucked and holding on tight (which I was).

I intend to do more stills then videos so I like this a lot as the camera is out and ready for action real quick.

I've got video of my ride, but it's 45 minutes of mostly just riding straight down 6 miles of arrow-straight road and another 5 miles of turn/straight a mile, turn, turn, straight a mile, etc. Not much to look at.

I was abused by a 4WD (that's aussie for SUV) driver from interstate yesterday. The whole time I was thinking "I wish I had my camera!" So today I videoed my commute.
See me avoid getting killed by Sydney's excellent drivers here.
Seriously, are all cities like this ? Am I a wimp? or am I right in thinking Sydney's drivers are NUTS!!

As long as I get a two second warning before a driver does a bone head maneuver I am more or less happy. Drivers do stupid things around each other so why should I be any different. Baltimore used to be just like what you showed two years ago but something has been changed. It's still no paradise but drivers passing to suddenly park or turn across your path has gotten less frequent. Passing over the double yellow and a racing to be the first when the road narrows is still common enough here.
PS. I liked your video, cute.

Your choice of lane positioning is what stood out to me the most - both where you placed yourself, and that it wasn't consistent.
I *think* I'd ride it differently, but it's hard to say until you're there.

That right-turning Subaru was ridiculous.
(A side note, I spent a week riding around Brisbane last summer and it was a comparative paradise.)

Picture quality isn't bad for the price, but is there anything out there that can capture a slightly better image without being too much bigger/heavier than the ATC-2000?

Thanks for the feedback ... I pretty much only ever ride on my own (most of my friends think Im crazy for commuting in Sydney), so its hard to know what is normal. Anyway, none of the incidents I filmed really annoyed me ... its all stuff that happens everyday and you quickly get over people doing stoopid things in front of you ... I even gave the subaru driver a wave (she was pretty cute - of couse at 43 everyone under 35 starts to look cute).
JeffS, I was most interested in your comment about positioning. Most of my commute (I didnt show it because its boring) is parked out bike lane on a busy road - I try to stay in the cycle lane as much as possible and pray I dont get doored when I go around a parked car (the stopping truck illustrates this nicely - I was just waiting for the door to open). Anyway, did you think my position was too close to the curb or too far out ? Or am I just all over the place ?

Here's my commute to work, unedited and with original audio - also taken with the ATC2000 - I used the helmet mount and that's why the angle was off (it took some experimentation to get that one lined up) - it's also pretty shaky, as the rubber band around the helmet had some give in it.

I've been out of the habit of riding with the camera recently, as I found I didn't have much time for screening/editing the footage. I should put the handlebar mount on and do some recent vids, and this harsh weather ought to be documented

Here is mine, it's of my son and me. I used a Sony Video Cam on a Ram mount. Quality was much better but I decreased the resolution to make it smaller. I think I over did it.

I can't watch some of these. I'm so drive-on-the-right ingrained that I keep thinking something horrible is about to happen when I watch your ride-on-the-left videos. I'm too old I guess....

Longest this past summer was around 5 miles. We took a tour of the surrounding cities during the July 4th week checking out firework displays. It was a fun time. We are both looking forward to Spring - although he's been begging me to take him for a ride in the snow - so maybe...
