Well Berthoud fenders are steel, so...well...I don't know what that has to do with this.

this is the pic of the specific model/color scheme I ordered:

From what I can see in the pic, it has eyelets on the seat stays and down by the dropouts, and also plenty of room for fenders under those brake cables.

So how did you get from cruiser to cross bike?

Was this just another "bored at work" thread?

Not really.

I'm getting tired of one speed. I like my fixed gear bike, and I don't plan to get rid of it... I just wanted more options. Mostly, my problem is that I want to go faster.

I had some choices with the FG bike, I could up the gearing ... currently using 49x16 and I can get up to speed easily and spin out the gear in traffic but it's just not enough for me.

If I gear up - then I'll have slower take-offs... more stress on my knees, etc...

The next thing is that there is no room for fenders on my bike... so wet weather is still an issue...

lastly, I want panniers in the rear... no more bookbag for me.

The specialized seems to cover all the bases.

I think it's a good choice, and it seems like everybody that has one likes it. Enjoy your new bike!

I realize the barn door has been closed and the ship has sailed in another direction, but my 20 yr plan involves converting my LHT to a cruiser by replacing the dropbars w/ those north road style ones.

Cruise to where? Grocery store and other errands are far enough that I want a faster bike (currently use a San Jose). My commute is 24 miles RT, so I use the San Jose for that as well. Going out on the weekends entails a half-hour+ drive into the city, so no cycling for that.

If I lived in a more urban setting, where commute and errands were all within a few miles, and night-life/dining opportunities were close, a cruiser would be a good choice.

Cruise for the sake of cruising? That's why it's called cruising. I have logged hundreds of miles of aimless cruising that were all just for fun, with no destination in mind. I highly recommend it.

to fordfaster, the tricross will be a nice 'cruiser'

here's a couple of cruisers that are very fast- Downhill!
even more so with a load of groceries!

My current one is the one on the right- I'm going to put some deore/mavic mtn hoops on there, some 60PSI Town and Countries, at least a LX 9 and possibly a triple front.

Well, the apple fell quite far from the tree on this one.....

After test-riding the tricross, I found it to have quite neutral steering (not what I'm used to, considering my daily rider has been a Mercier Kilo TT track bike), and my road bike is a CAAD9 Ultegra Grouppo.. I like bikes that have quick steering, twitchy almost... This is a MUST considering my daily traffic ballads....

After test riding a few other road bikes, I decided on the Specialized Roubaix Elite triple. (I got a deal on an 07 model that was just assembled!)

Now we come to the most important questions:

1. How do I get a pannier rack mounted to the rear? (I think I can use a seat-post mounted rack, with some modifications to support the lower attachment points for the bags...)

2. How do I get full fenders on this bike? (I think I can modify some zip-tie-on fenders from nashbar.com to fit this bike... only time will tell, I am ordering them today.).

I vowed that I would not get myself another race bike as a commuter... but after testing the tricross, I realized that speed and quick steering was more important than built-in fender rack bosses....

Here it is, full carbon fiber frame, and fork with zerts dampers built into the seat stays, seat post, and fork for comfort.

Seatpost mounted rack is a no-no for carbon. You'll have to get a metal post.

As for fenders,it doesn't look like there are any eyelets. Depending on how much room you have between the brake arms, you may have to run Race Blade type fenders.

Thanks for the warning. The bike shop owner told me that you can use a seatpost clamped rack, however you must follow the mfg suggested maximum torque specs.

I would chuck my Nashbar MTB frame for one of those in 3 seconds... IF they weren't $999 for the frameset.
