How do cyclists get sponsored?

I was riding with a cyclist today and he was all geared up and what not. He was on a singlespeed with nothing else, and he passed me. I usually like to speed up and go and pass them, but this time I did not. I was on his tail the whole time, he kept looking back as if I were going to pass him. I was able to keep up with him. I noticed at a stoplight that he had the same sponsor of the same car I've seen driving around town with, that I am able to tell is sponsored because its decorated in sponsors. Anyway, how do cyclists get sponsored? Just curious.

They join a team that's sponsored. Which means they have to be good enough to make the cut. Which means they train a lot and probably do little with their free time except hit the pavement or the rollers. You should probably have asked this in the Road or Track forum, though.

I was thinking that if I got panniers for my commute I could stick my backpack in one, then I could get a t-shirt with "rent this space" on the back with a phone number to call, and rent out advertising.

Then I could get paid for my commute.

I already get paid for my commute in the form of free parking and not paying for gas

I'm not sponsored by Cannondale but I do wear their jersey.

Were sponsored by a coffee house, an irish pub, a brewery, and a massage clinic. I think we got our priorities about right

Well I would argue that first two need to be swapped.
Anyway am I the only one who thinks jumping on some one else wheel un-announced is rude and dangerous?

Many of the sponsored guys in local teams only get a shop discount of about 20% to 50%.
