Trek Portland - Kick Stand :(
 

So I got my brand new Trek Portland 2 days ago. I am still loading it with stuff that I need. But in the mean time, I found out after purchasing that it wont take standard kick stands because of the way cables are routed at the bottom tube. It wont take the stands that fit to the rear of the bike either because they have disc brakes ...

Any trek portland owners here that have stuck a kick stand on it ? Checked with my LBS and he is gonna call up trek and see if they can suggest something :(

Tranz-x make an adjustable, disc compatible one that may suit.

I don't know why they sell incomplete bikes. At least it's got fenders...kind of.

I wouldn't consider no kick stand as incomplete as long as there are racks, or walls/trees to lean against, or ground to lay the bike on.

The bike rides nice, and it has great components. (I am a pretty novice rider to do technical comparision or as to how it rides), but the kickstand does disappoint me a little bit.

I knew before purchasing it that the fenders on it are a joke, and it has no racks so I was prepared for that. But the kickstand is a biggie for me because I run my errands on bicycle so would be kindaa handy to have a kick stand ..

That's fine if you like extra mud on your bike half the year. No racks or trees anywhere near anyplace I park, and some places get bent if you lean on their wall, plus if someone bumps the bike it'll fall, scraping its paint all the way down the wall.

Putting a kickstand on the bike at the factory would cost $2, and anyone that didn't want it could take it off.

I feel the same about fenders. Of course all this doesn't apply to road bikes, which are mostly ridden on nice sunny days and the owners think they're going to be a ton faster if they can drop 200 grams.

I have a rear kickstand which is frame mounted and should work with disc brakes.

mhifoe, do you have a photo of that kickstand installed? I'm having difficulty imagining how it attaches to the frame.

i bought a greenfield stabilizer for my commuting bike but it didn't fit on the oversized tubing. i think it will fit on my new bike! anyway it was like 15 bucks on amazon, i think.

wild animals- that won't work with discs I don't think. There's a guy I ride with that has one on his hybrid, however, and it works great.

You don't lock your bike? My Portland is locked even in my living room. I don't need a kickstand because the U-lock holds it to whatever I've locked to. (And please don't tell me you lock such a nice bike with a POS cable lock.)

Anyway, welcome to the Portland Owners Club.

I replaced the factory fenderettes on mine with SKS P-35s. They look good, work well and don't rattle. The trick on the front one is to turn the stays over and use the lowrider rack mount. I kept the fenderettes for when I travel, since full fenders don't fit in a bike case.

That will work on a Portland only if you remove the rear brake caliper. It mounts in the same place.

yeah, i'm obviously paying really close attention to what people are saying lately.

the funny thing is that when people do that to me, i find it really irritating.

Why don't they just make one that goes on only one of the stays?

Are you sure? Ive put kick stands on bikes like this by just being careful that the cables go over the kickstand mounting plate. I don't have specific experience with the Portland, but the plate on the kickstand isn't super-thick. Try it before you give up

I tried it with 2-3 different types of bottom mount kickstands and a few rear mount kickstands as well ! None would go on. Finally went to my LBS thinking he would definately have a solution ! They tried and gave up :( I am most probably getting one of the click foldable stands that wild animals suggested.

This gives me an idea. It would not fit the portland because of the disc brakes. The mount leaves no room on there to install the stand ..

If you have the tan version of this bike, the black kick stand would probably look pretty geeky :p

I agree. It would look pretty awkward.

But then the thing is, it already looks pretty wierd right now. Because it is the tan version with orange tapes and saddle, but then I have stuck up a black milk crate on my rear rack !!! :D Not really to save the money on decent panniers, but I just like the convinience of milk crate for both commuting and utility purposes like groceries and stuff !! So looks is least of my concerns .. Practicality and ease of use is my primary concern ..
