I like my gatorskins (700x23c) and can't recommend them enough, although I have had 2 flats since i've been using them (all winter), but one was my fault as it was a pinch flat, and the other was a metal staple.

Also the ride quality is waay better than my old tyres (Vittoria Zaffiros) and I managed to pick mine up last November for less than £12 at www.parker-inernational.co.uk but the price has gone up now.

Have commmuters reacted by going to lesser-priced tires that give similar durability results, or maybe similarly priced tires that last longer than the Armadillos? (which would be lower cost per mile). My priority is puncture resistance. Obviously it is not performance, since I am on Armadillos!

I see Continental Gatorskins on sale at one outlet for $37... but I wonder if I'm going to get a rash of flats on them compared to the Armadillos.

I'm also thinking - put a less-tough, less-expensive tire up front, and and a tougher, costlier tire on the back where I get 80% of the flats.

Please comment, thanks.
Getting back to the OP, $45 does seem like a lot of jin-jang for a bicycle tire. I guess that a lot of it has to do with volume. How many Armadillo bicycle tires in your size and model are produced/sold every year? I don't have the answer, but I think we might be shocked at how small the quantity is. As we all know, low quantity = high manufacturing cost = high price.

So, if you think they are the best and you love 'em, then the $10.00 difference in price is not worth worrying about for a year or so of riding. Some people spend more than that on their coffee in two days. (some people spend more on one coffee than I do on a six pack of beer!)

I think it's a valid point that you could probably get away with a less expensive tire up front. I've never flatted on the front, but then again, I've only flatted in the back about 6 times total in 4 years of daily riding. I just buy whatever comes up cheap on Nashbar clearance sales (typically $5 tires) or I can pick up cheap or free some other way, but that's due to essentially no road hazards where I live, so this isn't that useful to you I'm sure.

I get 3000 miles out of $5 tires so I'd want to get a hell of a lot out of expensive tires. I did actually put on some Race Lites that I paid $40 for a pair (I needed them immediately) over a year ago, I got around 5000 miles out of the one that was on the rear and felt ripped off. So I guess opinions vary on how long tires should last...

It looks like those are only the 23s. I'm guessing the OP probably wants to go with the 28s or 32s. Good deal though if you're looking for some 23s.

Conti UG's go 23mm - 32mm according to their website.

We've reached peak oil and you think these are bad things?
You also forgot to factor in the trillion dollar cost of keeping the oil flowing from our colony in Iraq.

And just imagine if tires were actually produced in the US/Canada or anywhere else where there are working environmental laws, working court systems, and no fascist government (China). That would probably double the cost.

I think China would be surprised to hear that their communist government is fascist.

28mm is the largest size ultra gator skin.

D'oh! I saw the 32, but that's a 27" tire not a 700c.

Only the drilling of new wells has peaked due to restrictions. Take for instance the Bakken field which the USGS study estimates a whopping 3.65 billion barrels of oil sitting under North Dakota, Montana and southeastern Saskatchewan.

Theres plenty of oil still in the ground but environmentalist's would rather starve people in poor countries while they burn food in there vehicles.

I Have about 300 miles on a cheap set of PerformanceBikes.com forte brand Kevlar tires, they ride well for the money and I have not had a flat yet on some pretty rough country roads that I commute on (knock on wood). So far well worth the low cost.

I feel most bicycle tires are reasonably priced. In addition, you get what you pay for...

On the contrary, environmentalists are some of the most vehement opponents of biofuels. If you're going to start in on a pointless rant like this at least get your facts straight.

I have been riding on gatorskins but have found my experience with flat has been about the same as with the vittoria's that came on my Schwinn DBX. I still like the gatorskins, but I have ruined one of them after an encounter with a nasty piece of glass. I was thinking about trying the armadillos next 'cause I hate to change tires in the dark and it is always dark when I get my flats.
