a couple of shots of my left elbow.. I have a small fracture in there..
I was right hooked about 4 blocks from work, and of course the guy
kept on going.. I think I left a pretty good scrape on his rear panel...

be careful and aware out there...

Ouch! Hope you heal fast.

Did you report the incident to the police?

thdave 04-10-08 01:17 PM

Many sympathies. I was almost right hooked today--my mirror saved me. I was almost at an intersection of a 4 lane road. I was turning left, which you can do from either lane. I had my arm out to give the signal and had stopped pedaling, and spotted this van trying to pass me on the left to get in front of me to turn right. What an idiot. She, of course, didn't have enough room.

I went left, too. That cut her off and she honked and snuck into the right lane.

That's a hefty price to pay just because a driver's too impatient. Get well!

Dude!
What bone is fractured?
I was parallel right hooked last month and fractured my radius at the elbow. It is still healing.
That is not a good coincidence. At least you have most of your health. :)

Ugh...sorry to hear that. People just love to get around the "slow biker" only to cut you off to make a turn. That's when you give them a little justice, let them know you're there iff'n they have to stop at the light or turn...ie bump their bumper with your wheel.

DataJunkie 04-10-08 01:24 PM

Or fly over their hood.

Heal well, and soon.

knatchwa 06-09-08 07:10 PM

+1 yeah sometimes I wonder, how likely would of that occurred if you were controlling the lane?

We don't know that OP wasn't doing so. No matter where you place yourself, there's only so much you can do to "control the lane" if a motorist is determined to pass you and cut in.

To OP, heal fast and I hope you get the jerk who hit you.

knatchwa 06-09-08 07:52 PM

that I will agree with, drivers all have different views, and yes you can never be sure when something of that sort may occur.

I broke my left "radial head" aka elbow last season.

I went through 2 months of physical therapy and was off the bike for 8 weeks. Even when I got back on, I couldn't put weight on it for very long. Over a year later, and my left arm is still much weaker than the right, not to mention the pain present at certain angles still. On the plus side, I do have a full range of motion :)

Happy healing, see you on the road!

yeah absolutely, your healing is wished to be rapid and full, just keep riding.

nick__45 06-09-08 08:17 PM

this makes me want to install a camera on my bike for this purpose. a hit and run leaving someone hurt like this sound like a $50k settlement, which should be enough for good therapy, good bike, and all additional safety gears to prevent future mishaps.

DCvision 06-09-08 10:13 PM

Thanks for all the well wishes.. I have been back on the bike for 2 days now (friday and monday), and it hasn't taken me long to remember why I enjoyed it.
@kevinsubaru .. yep.. I fractured my Radial Head, wasn't that bad. I haven't had any PT and have recovered all of my range of motion and 95% of strength. Push ups help, nice and easy, 2-5 or whatever feels okay, building to 10 a day.
I ended up getting a settlement from my Uninsured Motorist coverage ( a necessity in Miami!), which was an unexpected surprise.
Lessons learned-
If you have an incident, call the police. Even if it's just to file a report. It makes things easier for everybody.
Be Aware-My incident was in a quiet industrial/sketchy part of town, and I was not aware enough of what was happening behind me.

Thanks for all the words of support, I appreciate them.

Everyone be safe out there.
