What type of bike do I use to commute on?
 

I ride an OCR 2 Giant. It is a 56 mile one way commute through two passes in Southern California: La Tuna Canyon and Santa Susan Pass. (Don't ride every day.) It's a GREAT ride!

That's in my next of the {woods}, (Santa "Susanna" Pass BTW)

Racing is not my bag. I bought a 2004 REI Novara Safari and use it for commuting to work. I ride 4 miles, one way, most of it on street, some across field and under trees. Even ride in 5" of snow at 20 degrees F. I have front and rear racks, front and rear panniers, handbar pack, fenders. I have used it to transport a weeks worth of groceries or tent and supplies for a long weekend self-sustaining ride.

Best bike I've owned for everything but racing. Even at that the gear ratios are great for some high speed travel (30+ MPH on flats)

700c touring with fenders and rack. Nice geometry for the road and clearance for as fat a tire as needed; winter - spring - summer - rain : )

My SS or Fixed Gear.

I ride a recumbent. A Lightning Thunderbolt. I had to check other, even though I am sure that you didn't expect "other" to contain recumbents. Recumbents are SO MUCH FUN!
I love your velomobile. A lot of recumbent riders get trike fever, but I kinda want to try out a velomobile someday. It looks like fun.

recumbent I cna load it up if needed or add my trailer.

I ride a Dahon Presto- 16 inch folding bike

My commute if very short and flat. The Presto is perfect!

But why let it die when it is still a topical subject... and every year the bike manufactures come out with different models. I happen to be interested in this subject as this year I am considering retireing my 20 year old ride for a new bike... the technology has indeed changed quite a bit.

I commute on a Kona MTb frame. It was a $2700 bike at one time. Been reduced to a spray painted looking piece of junk with nerdy fenders and slicks, 40 degree wuss stem, you know the routine. A disk enabled cyclocross is the ultimate commuter. I couldn't justify mine though and sold it to buy a SS.

Yeah!....That was then, This is now!.... :p

When I was commuting (I retired last month), I rode my Dahon Helios SL on my short 3 mile commute.....When I return to commuting (looking for part-time job), I'll fix-up a beater SS/Fixie for winter riding..... :rolleyes:

Cannondale R300 road bike and soon (2-weeks) Trek 1000c.

I use an old steel Kona, but it was more like $700 bike at one time. Now, it's completely covered in stickers, have the fenders, the wuss sorta stem, rack, and street tires. Funny. Just got a cheapo fixed gear though, and it's fun, a whole new experience. The Kona is now regulated to rainy/crappy days...

for about a year now I have been using a steel Trek 820 Mt. bike which I love in the city because I have to look more at traffic than the potholes and junk laying in the road. On rain days either my 3-speed Hercules or my 3-speed Schwinn, both with fenders.

Word. Me too.

Right now my only bike is a Specilized Sirrus. Its a hybrid. I want to get a mountain bike eventually for nasty rainy days.
