My First Commute
What with gas prices soaring, I decided to take advantage of today's awesome weather. This morning I woke up an hour earlier, and put my nice work clothes in a backpack. The beginner in me took about 20 minutes to do 4.3mi.

Welcome to the club.
Incidentally, 4.3 miles in 20 minutes is not that bad. Now this is bad..... my first 3.5 mile ride took me 35 min on an ill fitting barely functional huffy mountain bike. It did not help that I was severely out of shape.

Congrats.
If you're riding through stop signs and lights (and obeying traffic laws...), 4.3 miles in 20 minutes is a perfectly respectable rate. My commute is 3.6 miles and takes me 15 minutes on the way to work, and around 20 coming back (more motor vehicle traffic, more ped and bicycle traffic on the MUP I use for most of that). On the flats I can cruise between 18 - 22 mph, but I end up averaging around 13 mph with all the stopping and slowing down.
