How come you don't see any bikes done up in school colors? How would you do it in a cost effective way?

Strip the bike down to bare frame and fork yourself. Spray paint.
Personally I'd hate to have my bike in school colours since the bike would last much longer than school and having to repaint can be a hassle. I'd guess that it'd be easier to identify your bike if you did it.

I've seen a few UT cruisers, all custom jobs.

Probably because normal people don't give a hoot what color their bike is.

Not to mention that if have your head screwed on right you won't give a hoot about your old college and be more concerned with earning a living, raising a family and doing things that matter..:)

Around here in ACC country they have no problem painting and decorating their Suburbans and Hummers in school colors...:rolleyes:

I'm not one to buy into the whole "school spirit" thing. I went there to learn, not to be part of some big cult. But yeah, if you really wanted to, you could either do it yourself or take it to an autoshop or something.

God forbid one leave any time for thinking about, you know, enjoyment. I suppose you'd be ready to institutionalize anyone who actually follows sports.

I went to ISU, my school colors wouldn't look right on anything other than a bike... Wait a minute, that's a good idea!

Meh, it's easier to just by the jersey.

Around here, it seems like the students and staff prefer to wear the school colors (UW-Madison's colors are red and white). So you'll run into plenty of people on bikes wearing bright red, but riding a black bike. This seems pretty sensible to me. Stripping paint is a *serious* pain in the ass. And a repaint is more prone to chips and scratches. So if you can keep the original paint job, it's a good idea. It's just not worth going to all that trouble if the original paint job is in good shape.

They USED to sell Red or White bikes, seems everything now is flat black, Anthracite or Gravel Gray:( Not too many colors from the larger manufacturers now. Of course having a bright RED Giant MTB with bright YELLOW freddy fenders...I could care less:p

White vintage is popular too *g*. Really tho, any neutral color will work find when you're wearing school colors. And I'm all in favor of red, since it's nicely visible in all seasons here. My school colors (navy blue and gold or navy blue and white) would not be anywhere near as good... especially since if you only wear one it's the blue!

And with any luck, my next bike will be red :D.

Because you're not looking at Wal-Mart bikes. Pretty much every wally world that I have ever been in that is located in a college town has junk bikes done up in the local university's colors. As far as custom bikes in school colors, at home in Austin is pretty much the only place where I've actually seen people pay money to have a bicycle custom painted in university colors.

luckily for me, my bike came in my school colors and also happens to be my favorite color (but not because its my school color)

Students already look like dorks, why would you go out of your way to look even more like a student-dork?

I suppose it's an interesting alternative to conventional birth control.

You won't find an UW-Madison alum more into the red and white thing than me, HOWEVER, I'll second the comment about stripping/painting a bike (done that before) - it was a major pain in the butt. For me, the Bucky Badger decal on my bike is a much easier way to show the old school spirit !

By the way, I have managed quite well to find time for a family, earn a quite decent living, AND find time to have some cycling fun !! (poking some fum at another post on this thread)

I went to KU 10 years ago (d@mn...time flies) and I don't think that I would want a bike that is baby blue and crimson. They weren't my favorite colors even when I was going to school there.

It's a university not a religion, ideology or cult. You probably you went to it due to it's geographic position and most likely your sub-standard academic performance, why do you feel the need to identify so strongly with an organisation; especially those of you who have left it? It was bad enough in UK universities when you got some overly excited fresher buying a branded sweater, but even they stopped after the first week (unless of course they joined a sports team, but that always overrules common sense, fashion sense and good taste).

I heard a rumor that my college had some sports teams, but I didn't see a lot of evidence of it. I now live near to U of Michigan, and yes, I would absolutely advocate that some of those nutters be put away. Best thing to do around here is to get a football schedule so you can know what days to stay out of town.

I was happy to go to school where I did, and I do give charitably to it, but honestly, a school is a school. I had friends who took the same major as me at several different schools, all the way up to MIT and in talking to them I don't think any of us got a significantly different education than the others.

I quite like sports if I'm playing them. I simply can't see any point in watching someone else do them. Whatever gene there is that allows someone to take pleasure in watching a bunch of people run around a field/track/ice rink/whatever, I guess I'm missing them. Just as well, it gives me more time to do stuff.

I think the biggest problem is that... it's just not very effective. There's not much room on a bike to put anything in the first place..and then even so no one notices.

Why are half the people in this thread angry towards universities and students? Perhaps because you are in the 46% of all students that drop out? If you are, decide what you want to do with your life and take action, but get over it

Hence my use of the word probably to indicate that this is not true in all cases. However, if we're realistic about it the portion of students in the top universities makes up a very small percentage of the overall number of students currently attending university. Therefore, if the aim is to attend the best university the majority of people are there due to sub-standard performance compared to the ideal performance.

Also if you look at a country as large as the USA I'd find it surprising that a mediocre student (which make the the majority of students) would travel extremely long distances to attend a university that fits their mediocre results. This would again indicate the geography plays an important point.

In the end all this is me trying to get my head around why anyone would ever want to make such an effort to show alleigance to a business. How many people are painting their bikes with Microsoft logos?

Well, look at all the people who wear Nike logos. Then again, they tend to fall into your previously-mentioned sportsfan group of which we've already decided there is no rational explanation. :p
