Biggest bang for your bucks
Which brand offer the biggest bang for your bucks when it comes to hybrids?
I heard for example you pay a premium for Cannondale while Jamis is well priced (not sure if it's true though)

Fit is more important than the deal. Jamis does give a good bike for the price. People seem to really like Treks and Specialized though. May just be name recognition. You may also get a decent deal on a last year's model at your LBS.

I am a Jamis believer!
My Commuter 3.0 with an 8 speed Nexus internal hub was $535! The only item I needed to buy was a rear rack, which I got for $30. I compared various bikes with similar specs and they cost way more. After riding it for the past 6 months, I would buy the same bike again!

+1 on the Fujis. Check out the Crosstown series which seems to come pretty well equipped for commuting from the get go. That said, there are many good hybrids out there these days so get a bike that fits you well and ride happy.

I paid $330 for my Giant Cypress which now has almost 14000 miles on it. The biggest problem I had was that the rear wheel was useless; I broke many spokes until I gave up and built myself a new rear, then had no troubles.
If I had to do it again I'd be interested in the Nexus 8 equipped bike discussed above; in general I have no trouble with shifting on a derailler, but I have had things freeze in the winter. Then again, it was probably the cables freezing, and if that's the case, the Nexus would still have the same problem.
