Theft

My main concern with having a new bike is to have it stolen.

What are the best way to avoid that (in terms of locks, chains, removing the wheels, the saddle, etc)?

MMACH 5 05-15-08 04:37 PM

If you can bring it into your place of work, that will best deter any shenanigans.

If you have to leave it outside, go with this:
Lock-Strategy

I've also read, here on BF, about a guy using a few small, dog-choker-chains and locks to secure things like saddles and wheels.

I use this in combination with this.

Having my bike being stolen isn't one of my worries.

How the heck do you take that with you? And doesn't it make your bike a little bit, um, heavy?

U-locks. Two of them. They are heavy, yes, but the inconvenience outweighs the inconvenience of bikelessness.

lmao end thread

I use a U lock with a cable lock. Get a security screw for the seat so it can't be released. I use a U lock to the frame and one of the wheels if possible and cable lock the other wheel / part of the frame. Works for me.

If my bike were worth closer to a grand or more I would totally do what wrenchdevil6 is doing. You've gotta ask yourself, if people are breaking into basements to steal the copper pipes off the water heater, what would they do if they realized how much your bike cost?

how are those kryptonite theft protection warranties? anyone have any experience with them? does that require a subscription fee?

Kryptonite Customer Service FAQ

As far as being worth a grand or more? Yeah, my bike is. And honestly, it's priceless to me as it is my commuter/trail bike.

U-Lock is either in a bag or my hip pocket.

Chain is usually thrown over my shoulder or in a bag.

All depends on where I'm going and how long the ride is, and the security is worth the weight.

Why I use these locks.

Good way to get your bike mangled.

That's fine for a short commute but if you're planning a 50 miles ride that's not an option.

No, then I'd bring my other U-lock and have the pair.

Good thing my bike is locked outside the shop with 1000ft of copper inside.

HoustonGal 05-15-08 11:17 PM

I use an OnGuard Mastiff (similar to that Fuggedaboutit posted upthread) and a Knox U-lock. I always park in the same spot, so I leave the locks locked to the rack at work. If I'm making a quick stop on the way home I'll bring the U lock along. My bike parking is supposedly video monitored, so I figure the giant chain will prevent anyone from really spending any time trying to liberate my Cross Check, not when there are about 10 less well locked and more attractive looking mountain bikes nearby.

cradduck 05-15-08 11:33 PM

I use a hardened steel chain with a disc lock (left on the rack at work) in combination with a u-lock that I take everywhere with me.
