Strickland's BTW article

I gotta rant here. Bill Strickland basically symbolically snubbed BTWweek in this article <http://sittingin.bicycling.com/2008/05/i-drove-to-work.html> and I am in a similiar state of mind, but for different motives. For me, encouraging coworkers to bike to work has been a looooong & fruitless process. I lent my bike to one guy last summer, 3 months he rode until wimping out in the early early fall. Ok, at least he rode 3 -4 months. But another potentially enthused commuter wanted to start but had neither the biike nor the $$ to buy one. I offered to help her fix one upat the local bike recycle/swap. On the agreed to Sat morning, she blew me off totally.

Recently, another coworker asked for some advice. I told him what it took to do a commute. He listened.
Then he said he didn't have a bike so I offered to let him ride mine for a week to see if he really could.
I offered that he could buy it for a very, very reasonable price but I insisted that he test ride a few bikes before deciding. I haven't heard back from him on it.

Frankly, now, I don't care. People give too many excuses, talk an ok game but really aren't willing to make themselves do this sort of thing. Fine I guess. As gas keeps jackin up, they might change.

I have encountered similar response. I think the answer is in actually getting out and riding with them. I have plans to do so with two friends. I'll even ride out of my way to ride with them. If that doesn't work, it's out of my hands.
