The local paper said to expect up to 200 per square yard. I haven't seen anything near that. Anyone got inundated by these things yet? Here's a emergence map. https://inside.msj.edu/academics/facu..._Calendar.html

They are (as your link indicates) called cicadas. I was in Maryland during the last emergence. If you're near any wooded area, you'll hear them making an incredible racket (a sort of buzz-sawy sound, if I recall correctl.) They are huge, clumsy, and ugly, but completely harmless. I found them kind of endearing, actually. I work in a secured government facility, and once as I was heading in towards the gate on foot, the guard stopped me and said "You have a passenger!" Startled, I started looking behind me, thinking someone was trying to follow me in . . . and there, perched on my shoulder, was a cicada. I gently put him (her?) on the ground, with his bazillion compatriots.
They do make a mess, though -- splatting into your car windshield (don't forget the sunglasses on your bike rides!), getting squashed underfoot.

My area might be on the fringe of this. I know the last time we were told of an emergence maybe two years ago, very little if anything happened. I was kinda looking forward to it.

As the link you provided describes, you won't see them for another few weeks. They're just now starting to come out of the ground. And when they come out in full force, you'll notice them. Trust me. Even if you don't see any (hah!), you'll certainly hear them. I've been through a few cicada summers and you just learn to accept them. They're totally harmless (to us at least). And you'll end up killing yourself if you try to avoid hitting them on your bike. When they do pop out in June/July, just ride with your mouth closed and don't worry about the crunching sounds under your tires.
